Best way to transport firearms while hunting?

usually let my guns ride in the vehicle with me. unloaded, in a soft case, laying across the back seat.

unless they miss. then i make them walk. naked.

Stuff the AR between the seat and the console and put the shotgun in the back seat. NM has no rigid requirements - you can carry a loaded rifle on the dash if you're inclined. (That's not a recommendation by the way.

My regular hunting partner is left handed & both my truck and jeep are equipped with double racks w/brackets to hang our ear muffs, a flashlight and snaps for a couple of hand calls. Rifles are held muzzle forward in rack for easy access, bolts lifted and on safe and are deployed muzzle first out the door w/zero danger of sweeping partner w/muzzle.

a lot is going to depend on your state's transport laws.

here in michigan to travel with a gun the following rules apply

At all times, when carried in or on an off-road vehicle (ORV):

*Rifles, shotguns, muzzleloading and other firearms must be unloaded in both barrel and magazine and enclosed in a case or equipped with and made inoperative by a manufactured keylocked trigger-housing mechanism.

here the magazine unloaded rule does not apply to detachable magazines. the magwell (and chamber) just needs to be kept empty for the firearm to be considered unloaded. the loaded magazine can even be kept in the same case with the firearm as long as its outside the magwell. on permanent magazines (tube mags, non-removeable internal box magazines on bolt guns, etc) you have to unload them.

when i travel to and from hunting spots, its with a hard case on the back seat. i usually only secure the latches closest to me so i dont have to remove the case or reach all the way across the car to unlatch the muzzle end of the gun case. i either keep my magazine in my pocket or in the case with the gun.

if there's two of us we each have the muzzle facing the opposite side of the vehicle you're sitting on . that way you can pick the gun up by the buttstock and keep the muzzle pointed down and not sweep each other and only load the guns after they're removed from the car.

you're only allowed to shoot from a stationary motor vehicle/atv if you're disabled.

I made this.. If you get the plastic at the home store, you can put it in the oven and heat it up, and then bend it on a form to any shape you want. I then super glued the leather on to keep from scratching any nice guns i might put in there, other than my coyote guns. (i don't worry about scratches on my coyote guns)

But, after years of riding with my weapon next to me in the Marines, I still keep one next to me in the vehicle.

I have a 2003 Dodge with a nice and wide middle console a rifle lays nicels accross that with the muzzle pointed forward and the bolt up. Basically anything is legal here which is nice those states that require a gun to be in a closed case would not jive well with more or basically anyone i know around here. I recall a magazine article that followed a game warden around who was writing tickets for cases that were not zipped all the way closed, just seems silly to me.

Now in South Dakota the law changes with atvs/utvs and it makes it a real inconvenience.

I carry mine the same way in my Dodge. But if I'm not hunting at home I only have a half mile drive to my next spot. Gott'a like those wide consoles.

Mine is always in a hardcase in the bed of the truck. Keep the mag in my pocket or a a few shotgun shells. Anytime I am hunting, I am offroad. The truck is bucking around so much the gun has be in a case or risk being crushed.

Like this......

Or this....

I'll use cases maybe if I'm travelling long distances, but I like my rifle up front and accessible.. Muzzle always taped, obviously..

I've found that electric windows with leather gloves folded on top for a pad, make for an exceptional, quickly adjustable rest...
