Best Yote Dog

Your opinions on what you believe to be the better of the hounds for yote hunting...

Your opinions are much appreciated.... Any links to breeders of these dogs would also be appreciated.

What type of hunting style are you going to use? Some people run them down, some keep their dogs next to them, others use them as a decoy. It all depends on the kind of hunting you are going to do. From my experience you need a dog that loves to run for coyotes, regardless what breed you choose.

Well like the last post asks it depends on what kind of hunting you are planning on doing. But you did use the word hound, so i figure you are talking about running hounds. Well there are really only 2 choices, the walker hound and july hound. Generally speaking, your july hounds are bred for more speed, and fight. Whereas your walker hounds are bred for tracking and endurance. Of course not each hound is exactly like this, but thats how they were originally bred. You really can't go wrong with either breed as you will find good and bad ones in each. Just do a little asking around and if you are buying one that is already running, make sure you get a trial period, unless you are buying from a well-known friend. Good luck, MOyotehunter

Sorry guys, I'd like to use the dog for decoy purposes, tracking a wounded yote, early warning, not one for running the dog only because of the area I hunt in.

There are houses in the area I hunt, and if a good pursuit took place, I'd hate to have my dog get shot by someone thinking it's a yote.

Thanks guys. I've heard good things about both breeds posted here. That staghound looks like it could flat move out at warp drive the way it's built for speed.

I must be something to watch these dogs go after the yotes.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have a one year old kemmer cur and he's the greatest. Just having him around seems to make those yotes dumber. I had 2 yotes hang up on a ridge and I could see their head moving in unison as my dog walked by me. Then they started sprinting straight towards me, except there was three. Before I knew it they were all within 50 yards. I got scared for my young dog and I rushed a shot. The mouse squeaker didnt' phase these dogs. It was kinda spooky the way they came towards us. I shot and when I turned around, my dog was running one up a hill. I wounded one a different day and my dog tracked him for a long while before coming back. A three legged Yote can still move pretty good.

Well, when he was neutered at 9 months (I regret it) he was 40lbs, but he should be more than that now. He's real lean. The yote I shot was no bigger than he. Or course yotes have a lot more fur and look bigger. I guess my dog is close to 50lbs. A guy up in MOntana has a 75lbs kemmer cur male. wow.

I'm having a hard time finding a breeder that hunts coyotes with a tan cur. every one hunts bears or hogs with this breed.

Can some one please point me in the right direction!?!

Best coyote dog, I ever seen & heard about. Was a male greyhound owned by an old coyote houndsman. He farmed in the country by Creston, Iowa. This dog grew to a massive size, 39" @ the shoulder(was the size of a huge Great-Dane). This dog would consistantly kill coyotes by his self in a short manner. Clyde would use other dogs(greyhounds) to catch the yote(This dog lagged behind the chase...slower).

Once he caught up to the fight, he'd wade in, push the other dogs out. So he could have the yote to himself(he hated them, with a passion). He'd kill them quickly, and carry them back to Clyde's truck. Clyde also told me he could jump fences with a dead yote in his mouth. What a dog. He killed many, many coyotes.

Only once did he not accomplish his task. He did battle with a very large Black coydog, for about 1/2hr. They ended up shooting the coydog. Clyde said "it" weighed 75lbs. Looked mostly coyote.

Boy! I'd loved to seen that battle.

Ok been awhile since the last time i was on here, great to be back. We use Greyhounds here in Nebraska and we have alot of fun with it. We run the dogs in the winter and race them in the summer just to keep them in shape. Ive only been around them for about four years and now im getting my kids involved in it and they just love it.Greyhound all the way!

thepup, COOL!. We had greyhounds & staghounds and trailhounds for about 18yrs or better. Use to run Jacks & fox. Then in 1968 came across a coyote. From then on stuck with the big-dogs(yotes). Loved to watch them run, great memories.

Most of the coyote hunting videos I've seen all use the buttermilk curs. The guy I got my dog from (in Utah) used a reddish cur and a brindle cur, but now he uses a female buttermilk from the same litter I got my dog from. Kemmer curs seem to be more buttermilk than not. I would recommend going to the KSBA homepage and posting a message on the board. They'll hook you up.
