I got invited to help out on my Cousins boys deer hunt last weekend. It was myself, my cousin and his boy, and another Cousins boy and his young son. This was the first hunt (deer and coyote) for the youngest boy.
During an afternoon lul, we decided to go make a couple stands while my cousin took a nap. 4 people on stand and 2 shooters. Me with cousins boy and the other cousins boy and his son set together.
The first stand was a bust.
About a minute or two into stand #2 my partner says he sees a coyote. I for the life of my can't find it, but I'm looking for movement at reasonably close distances.
After some instructions as to where this coyote is, I finally am on target. No matter what sound I threw, it wouldn't budget. At one point it gets up and starts to head out. I asked him to range it. 337 yrds. I take a WAG (wild ass guess) and put where the crosshair goes from skinny to fat on it and sent one loose. WHACK! He'll of a poke for this old blind bat and having never shot a target past a hundred yrds nor a coyote much past 200.
The hit was a little far back which was evident by the spinning but it only stumbled a few yards and into a ravine behind a tree and never came out.
I sent the younger boys to go fetch it.
After the recovery the youngest boy said he saw another a lot closer but wasn't able to get his dad on it.
My Cousins boy is a taxidermist so we stripped the tail and saved the skull. He's going to clean the skull and tan the tail for his young nephew in honor of his first hunt.
Oh and he filled his deer tag the next morning..... while I was sleeping in back at camp.
