Big Snowstorm Next Week

Well if the forecast holds together as forecasted the big snowstorm and cold temps may bring some excellent hunting conditions to the Midwest. But we know how weatherman are. They can lie and still hold down their jobs. Looking forward to this but know my pals at work are not.

I'm not looking forward to any snowstorm(s) at all. It can close off a lot of areas for hunting. The lake effect snow can be a real killer here. Besides, if there's a snowstorm, I'll have to start plowing snow and that cuts into hunting time. Cold? It's 13 F and falling right now. That's cold enough. MI VHNTR

Added on edit: It went down to +7 F

I hear ya buddy. My brother called me already and says he's got the snowshoes ready. Ole John Dee is predicting some pretty heavy LES in areas. Max. of 3" an hour.
Being down here in Cowtown any kind of snow like we get in the U.P. would decimate it.
But fortunately it very rarely happens although we hav been getting a bit more snow the last couple of winters and if it even comes close to snowing here the way it rained all spring and summer there's real trouble.
If it gets that bad I too will have to pull out the snowshoes. I hope it holds off for you and throw another log on that fire. Sauna doesn't sound to bad either.

How do you guys up north deal with all the snowmobilers running around. I bet they can really mess up some of your stands.

Could be interesting... From the fine folks at the NWS...

... WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM TUESDAY TO 1 AM EST THURSDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MARQUETTE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM TUESDAY TO 1 AM EST THURSDAY. THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* WIDESPREAD SNOW WILL MOVE INTO UPPER MICHIGAN TUESDAY EVENING AND INCREASE IN INTENSITY TUESDAY NIGHT. THE SNOW WILL BEGIN TO TAPER OFF WEDNESDAY NIGHT. STRONG WINDS WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT BLOWING SNOW INTO WEDNESDAY EVENING. IN ADDITION... THE STRONG NORTH WINDS WILL ALSO RESULT IN HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS DOWNWIND FROM LAKE SUPERIOR THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

* STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 12 TO 18 INCHES OR MORE CAN BE EXPECTED TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT... HIGHEST ALONG THE HIGHER TERRAIN... FROM SKANDIA THROUGH NEGAUNEE AND THE HURON MOUNTAINS.

* THE MAIN IMPACT WILL BE SNOW COVERED ROADS AND REDUCED VISIBILITY WITH BLOWING SNOW TO NEAR ONE QUARTER MILE... MAINLY IN OPEN AREAS. THIS MAY RESULT IN THE CLOSURE OF M-28 EAST OF HARVEY DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY.

We're suppossed to get dumped on here in the middle of the U.P. on the Northern shore line. I'm just hoping for some ice build up before the winds hit to stop some erosion from Superior. I have Yotes coming into the yard already.

Sorry I started this thread boys. My brother called from Keweenaw Bay and said he's battoning down the hatches. Local rumors out Nisula way could be 2 plus! Holy Wah!

And the good news just keeps on coming. The Super Duty is all set to start plowing snow. The updated forecast:

... BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 1 AM EST THURSDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MARQUETTE HAS UPGRADED THE WINTER STORM WARNING TO A BLIZZARD WARNING... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 1 AM EST THURSDAY.

* WIDESPREAD SNOW WILL DEVELOP OVER NORTH CENTRAL UPPER MICHIGAN THIS EVENING AND INCREASE IN INTENSITY THROUGH THE NIGHT. THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE HEAVY AT TIMES BEFORE TAPERING OFF TO LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE SIGNIFICANT BLOWING SNOW LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING WITH LIFE THREATENING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS.

* STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 12 TO 24 INCHES ARE FORECAST THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT... WITH THE GREATEST SNOWFALL OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN FROM THE HURON MOUNTAINS TO NEGAUNEE.

* EXPECT SUSTAINED NORTHEAST WINDS TO INCREASE TO 20 TO 35 MPH BY DAYBREAK ON WEDNESDAY... WITH FREQUENT GUSTS TO 45 MPH. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE MOST LIKELY AT EXPOSED LOCATIONS ALONG LAKE SUPERIOR FROM KEWEENAW BAY EAST TO BIG BAY AND MARQUETTE. THESE STRONG WINDS WILL DIMINISH LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

* THE HEAVY SNOW... IN COMBINATION WITH EXTENSIVE BLOWING SNOW WHIPPED UP BY THE GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS... WILL CAUSE VISIBILITY TO FALL TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES LATE TONIGHT THROUGH THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY. THESE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL LIKELY RESULT IN THE CLOSURE OF M-28 BETWEEN HARVEY AND MUNISING DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY. OTHER ROADS IN EXPOSED LOCATIONS MAY BECOME IMPASSABLE AS WELL.

Snow total so far is 20"+ and more to come. Blizzard Warning still up. Winds will switch to the NW tomorrow and shut off the lake effect for us. Streets just got plowed for the first time today. The Super Duty earned its keep today. MI VHNTR

I feel for ya. Talked to my Bro. about an hour ago and he's all in til it's over. New rumors for western U.P. of totals of 4' in some areas. I have gotten right at 3' at my house out Nisula way. Still coming hard! You know ya never hear about it snowing like that up home. They always talk about out west or out east. Superior helps to pack the ultimate wallop!

Well, the storm hit the west end and our weather is clear and still: "clear up to your butt and still coming." It is one degree and the west wind is 15mph. Snowshoes are not needed as yet but they should be ready. The lake snow will be next. I would estimate 15-20" of snow since Monday. The wind and temperature will be the issues for hunting this weekend.

That is sure alot of snow. Might make it a bit harder to get to the stands. But thats just another part of the hunt. Gotta love it.

I tried to respond last Wednesday but it was scratched or I forgot to submit it. However the weather was clear and still----clear up to your butt and still coming. It is an old saying over here and much enjoyed in Lansing. Today looks great and I hope to have a date with a coyote. The storm dropped about 18" in the area and the deer are moving to the deer yards.

Gonna talk to my brother tonight. Might have to go out to my house and clear off the roof. Another push of cold air to crank up the LES for ya, eh.
