Binocular magnification power...

so i live in Southern Nevada and hunt the pretty much open desert for coyotes. i'm looking into getting my first pair of binoculars and was wondering if i should go with the 6x or 8x? is the 6x enough? i'm looking at the Leupold Yosemite for a starter. thanks.

If they're compact, 6X would be brighter. If they're full-size binos, 7 or 8X are my favorites.

I've got some 8X23 Nikon compacts and they're not worth much in the timber or looking back into the shadows. I like 8X binos, but don't expect too much low-light performance out of compacts.

10 X 40's aren't very "compact", though. I have some 7 X 35 Nikon's that work a LOT better for hunting the black timber on dark, rainy days, but they sure aren't that nice to pack inside your jacket like the compacts.
I was just giving him a heads up on performance, I'm not sure it's ever going to be a problem (depends on what he's doing with them).

The timber here in the Coast Range is a lot darker than what you're used to, trust me.

Evil Lurker they are the older style zeiss 10x40B's. Pretty compact. Much smaller than most nikons I have seen. 6 3/8 x 4 x 2 inches adjusted for
my eyes.

I was looking at the binos he was considering. I don't think Zeiss is in his budget.

Then again, living in S. Nevada, black timber prbably isn't going to be a very big concern, either.

I'd go with the 8X myself for pure desert hunting.

I have the Yosemite's that I bought just to put in the vehicle for occasional use and they are decent bino's... really nice for the money I paid.
