Bird distress call techniques

I'm looking for the techniques you guys use to make a good ditress woodpecker with your had calls.

I'm looking for a soft sounding call that will sound like a dying bird.

Got any ideas.

sleddogg,
Remember the machine gun sound you used as a kid? Trilling your tounge on roof of your mouth while blowing a predator call gives really good bird distress sound.

Thanks Rich - Ya I was talkin' to Wishbone on the phone this A.M., and he gave me the exact same advice. I've been practicing out back, and suprised the 'yotes haven't stampeded over me yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Wishbone sounded good on the phone, I will need a little practice.......

I have found that it is easier for me to make woodpecker distress calls from a closed reed call vs. and open reed. I have found however, that with a Sceery AP-7, if you are at the very tip of the reed, you can make some AWESOME baby bird distress calls. Very high pitched. I had a big coon come tearing through the bush just seconds after I started calling with that sound one night. My cats seem to go crazy over it too.
