hey guys a got drawn for a bear license in mn. this year, i will be hunting over bait so the shot should be fairly close, iv'e always used a .308 with 150 grain federal power shok soft point for deer & have dropped many with this round, is this suffecient for bear or should i go up to 180 grain weight or a different style bullet, it needs to be a factory load, i dont reload, thanks for the replies.

A 180 gr. would be great. If you are confident, competent and sighted in with your 150s, I expect they would work just as well. I would check the zero at expected ranges and just go get'er done.

Placement is everything. I use a 45-70 with 250 grain Barns bullet. They open up and cut them like a broadhead. I have checked it out on every bear I shoot.
I think you could get away with a smaller bullet like the 150 grainer but I would choose a heavier bullet to increase your ods of a quicker kill.

I shoot a 7mm-08 for deer and take it out for bear. I've never shot a bear, but am not afraid of wounding one.I use 140 Gr. Nosler Partitions, and I'm confident with this bullet.Your 150's will handle any baiting situation. If you were shooting at a bear across a canyon or something, and may not get the perfect shot, maybe more power would be wanted.Hopefully, you can pick the right shot at the bait.I wouldn't worry, you are probably comfortable with this set-up.

Dang 45-70, 250 grain, im sure that does the trick on a treed bear.. ha ha

thanks for the advice guys, my gun is very accurate with those bullets & my shots should be less than 50 yards so i should be able to get a good shot, so i will stick with the 150's & show some pics if i get one, season doesnt start till sept.1, cant wait.

JUST REMEMBER! Most importantly!

Good luck.

Factory 130 grain Winchester Power Point out of a .270 Winchester killed mine at approximately 80 yards. Agree with above, shot placement is key.

That being said, anatomy of a bear is different from a deer. Look for some diagrams of their organs, before you go.

Good luck

Good Luck Bluebill, you should be in Great Shape with the 150gr., 308, but as stated Good Shot Placement, and knowing the animal's anatomy is a must with any size Bullet if you are wanting to make a good clean kill.

Thanks for posting those anatomy charts, very interesting, just got to wait for the front leg to be ahead a little so the soft point doesn't have to break the shoulder bone & I should be fine. Baiting starts in a month, got 4 barrels full of donuts ready to go so far.

Keep in mind,

If you shoot a bear with it's leg forward, don't hug the leg/shoulder tight on the shot. It is very easy to shoot in front of the vitals esp when the bear is angleing away. The leg forward is more for bowhunters so you don't clip the leg/shoulder. I prefer a broadside with leg straight down and shot tucked on the edge of it about 1/2 up the body.

Fall bears are easyier to see the body outline due to short hair. Spring bear have long hair which ads alot of body size that is all hair. Seen many guys try heart shoot a bear only to get all hair,or no vitals.
Good luck.
