Black Coyotes..

Red Lobo

Last year I called in and shot a black coyote. since then, I have called in 2 others this year (at night with a light...didnt kill either one.. just playing) I talked to a friend here about 2 weeks ago who killed a black as well. does anyone else see these blacks in other parts of the country?? What causes them to become black? are they crossed with domestic dogs somewhere back up the line?? I've been kinda curious about this for a while.

There are reports of black coyotes where I grew up at in Central, PA...I haven't had the opportunity to use my new Foxpro in that area...I just know that if I shot a black coyote, I'd like to have it mounted.

We have them here in the People's Republic of Kalifornistan but they are rare.

I've been after the same one for close to two years now. The only time I ever see him/her is when I'm opening the gate and it's doing Mach 5 in the other direction.

I actually saw a black coyote for the first time last Dec. He never came to my call but was spooked out of a slough when I was heading to my stand.

i had one come to my call.. he walked in from an odd direction( the direction i wasn't looking).. crossed in front of me .. bout 8 feet.. i had my scope on 14x.. couldn't get a shot off for nothing :/ i believe they may be coydogs.. but i'm not sure

I had one respond to the call and thought a housedog was closing, so I didn't have the rifle ready when he/she realized something was very wrong and whirled to leave, at about Mach 10. I then saw the tail, but he/she was gone before I could get a good sight picture.
The Blacks are more common on the east coast. Most are mistaken for dogs....

We've seen a black one twice in the last week and a half. We can't get the sucker though because he lives in an elk pen with about 150 head of elk, We can see where he sneaks under the gates but we havent caught him outside yet.

I would also be interested in purchasing a pelt if anyone out there gets one of these!! Please let me know.

From what I understand, any trace of domestic dog interbred w/ a coyote is completely gone after 2nd. gen. The color variations we have in the east are said to be recessant wolf genes from the coyotes migration east. (i.e. black, red, etc.)I've gotten 2 black ones (trapped) and seen a dozen others and the one feature they all seem to share is some type of white patch on the chest(cross, diamond). Given the size difference from west to east a little wolf genetics makes sense.

G_Morgan posted a photo of a black Coyote in the Photo section, Page 3. There was also some other photos posted of black dogs but i could not find them again. I have never seen one here in Utah, I wonder if there are any around here?

I hunt a lot in Henry Co., Illinois. I have seen jet black yotes, blond yotes, reddish, normal grey/tan, and some that are almost calico. Funny thing though, they all bleed red.

yeah i hae seen black ones to they always seem to be not far from a creek or something such as that ( something with water)

These other two are pictures of a black coyote I shot this year. I've called in several over the years ,all in the Eastern US. Never saw one out West.
