Black Mouth Cur cross Black and Tan

deerassassin,

You seem very interested in dogs. Any particular reason you're wondering about the cross? I'm sure somebody has tried it, but are you looking at getting one, or just curious? If somebody had done the cross, they will probably tell you some turned out like the parents style, more like one or the other. I had two littermate blueticks, the parents were both fully open on track, but they were both semi-silent on track, and hammering chop tree dogs, like the grandparents. With two completely different breeds, you are likely going to get some like either of the parents, some like neither of the parents, and some that ain't worth the feed.

I made a Catahoulla x Black and Tan cross.
Some of the pups are full open, some are silent, and most are semi open. Some have cold nose some have med nose.
None of the pups were as cold nose as the momma, but all were colder nosed than the dad. Most of the pups had "big horns"I was happy with the cross for what I do, but they wouldn't suit some guys.
The "Zipper" pup, and "Droopy", were out of that litter.
You have seen lots of pics of them on here.

The main thing you need to remember DA is that even if you get info from someone that made this or any cross it will have ZERO bearing on similar crosses. Hunter #1 could make this cross and get dogs that resemble B&T's in all aspects, looks and hunting style. Hunter #2 could make a similar cross and get dogs that resemble BMC's in all aspects. You could get anything in between.

The traits in today's breeds have been developed for decades and centuries and they still aren't even close to 100%. Most hounds are open, some are still silent. Most curs are silent, some are open. Like I said, nothing is 100% even after years of SPECIFIC breeding.

The info you are seeking is non-existent. No one here (or anywhere) could tell you what will happen in this cross.

Find a BREED that has traits you seek and go with it (when you can get a dog). Hunt the [beeep] outta the dog and hope for the best. Crosses are crap shoots. Will you get a dog that will hunt with this cross (given that both parents are from hunting stock)? More than likely yes. But how they hunt or what they look like is anyone's guess.

Chris, I wish I was blessed with your writin ability.
What you said was the point I was trying to make.I either lucked out, or I just hunt these dogs so much,I can get "performance "out of them. But there is no "sure thing" with papered dogs, not to mention crosses. I cross dogs because I have a few dogs, alittle knowledge, and lots of ground to hunt.I enjoy it. But I never know what the pups will be like.I only breed proven dogs, but I will "x" totally different traits once in awhile.
I guess all I can say is the good ones are good, and the bad ones aren't around anymore.

Duane, I have zero problems with crosses and have been known to toy with em myself. But as you poiunted it it's kinda like looking behind door #3, you don't know what you'll get. Will you get hunting dogs? Yes. But as you know, you have no idea what kinda traits you will get. But with your dogs I wouldn't worry about it much, you got yourself some greta game dogs there brother!

The reason i ask is a friend of mine has a black mouth cur that they use to herd cattle along with there 10 hangin tree cowdogs but he has a male walker and a black and tan. Not for sure on the gender. Thought that one more nose(from the pups) would be better than 2. Maybe im wrong. But i figured since his dog clayton(the black mouth) is already trained to herd cattle not to try and teach him how to run a track would be to much for one dog. They use all the technial commands and stuff. So figured he might want to try a cross of black and tan and a black mouth. might fit him better than his hounds do. He doesn't go all night only 4 or 5 hours a night(i've heard that curs put the coon in the cur is silent). Just a thought.

if your friend wants to run his BMC on game he should try to, if the dog is willing to learn, a lot of people use the same dogs for all diffrent types of game or herding, im pritty sure Duane uses his cow dogs for coyote, badger,a few hogs and blood trailing exc. i have friends that work cows all day with there muts and after work go bay a hog or coyote with the same dogs the only thing is if the dog is willing to learn something new not all can but some can its not uncomin.

Agree with HogDogs there. The one thing I wouldn't do is breed that BMC to a hunting dog unless THAT BMC HUNTS. I don't care if it comes from hunting stock, only breed hunters to hunters. Sounds like a risky cross at best.

The BMC kills the coon when he shoots it out of the tree I'll ask if he has ever tried runnig the track with him. You guys brought up some good pionts like if its not a hunter don't breed it to a hunting dog and he may be capable of doing both. Thanks

I'll try to clear some of this up,(as pertains to my dogs)
I have 9 dogs here right now,6 of the 9 work cattle on a regular basis, either my cattle or freinds that need cattle off the mountain.
These same dogs will sight chase anything they are "sic'ed" on,blood trail, and run certain tracks.
My other three dogs run cats and bears only, they are broke off everything else.
I am blessed with some good dogs, but its taken over twenty years and a bunch of dogs to get here.
I'm sorry I don't recall who said this but its one of thebest things I've heard on the board,"a cross is a crap shoot at best". I agree 100%
I have had some awesome cross dogs, and some pure d!nks,I guess we all have to look at our circumstances, what we have for dogs, and how much of a gamble are we willing to take.

sorry duane did not mean to put you on the spot like that i was just trying to prove a point i really know nothing about you or your dogs i just heard they were multie taskers and they were really good at what they do

i have all ways found that the best percentage of dogs that turn out good or great come from a long line of hunting parints cross's or purebred papers to me dont mean $hit

Hogsdogs,Don't give it a thought. You didn't say anything thats not true. I'm "OK" with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
