Blackberry picking

Does any one else have the compulsion to pick Blackberries like I do? Last week, when they were just starting to ripen, I picked 8 galloms. This week should be even better, if I continue to pick.

The wife has been cooking them down and freezing the juice for jelly making at a later date.

My wife says it's my OCD that makes me a picking whore when it comes to Blackberries and Muscadines. lol

It's been a near perfect year for berries here so far.
Early warm up, with more blooms than I've ever seen, and then just enough rain to keep them growing, and some light showers when they were starting to turn black and ripen.

I've gotta go, I can hear the berrie calling to me.
Going to put on my heavy bibs and tall boots for the briars and snakes.

I love berry pickin' too, but they are not ripe this far north for another month. I like them as they are, but we also make jelly and crumbcake with them.

Hmmm, crumbcake sounds interesting.
Have you got a recipe?
Cobbler and jelly is about all we have ever done, but we're allways willing to try something new.

I came across a recipe for Muscadine cake, where you use Muscadine juice in the cake. It was great!

Brings back memories of berry picking with my grandpa. I found a huge blackberry patch while turkey hunting... I wonder if any are left from the critters of way back in there.

Most years it either gets to dry for the berries to get bigger that BB's, or the crop dusters get them.

Yeah GC, I picked with my Grandfather too.

No rasberries or wild strawberries here, but when they make and I can find them, the Blackberries and Muscadines catch heck.

I picked my first tame Muscadines last year, and they were surprisingly good. Good enough I planted 2 rows this spring and plan on 2 more next spring. Along with a row of grapes for the wife.

i havent even seen blooms yet. i do like blackberrys and huckleberrys. takes a lot of huckleberrys to make a jar of jelly, but its worth it.

My parents have a lot of rasberry bushes that I used to pick from and we used to get wild strawberries at my grandparents. The one I miss most though is my aunts chokcherry jam MMMMMMM

choke cherry syrup on pancakes yumm
i just saw on the news some guy found a wooly mammoth in his back yard while pickin blackberries.
didn't catch the whole story but made me want to go pick berries.

I lost count, but I'm well over 20 gallons of Blackberries for the year. I would have quit before now, but I picked the last 5 gallons for wine making.

We've had 2 cobblers so far, with a 3rd planned for today. The wife has juiced 15 down gallons for jelly, so I think I'm done for the year.

My daughter and son-in-law have a bunch of Blackberry bushes on the back of their property...The branches were full a week ago and we picked some of the riper ones...Thinking that the rest would be ready this weekend, we found the bushes stripped bare....Dog gone Deer...

Yeah, I was picking about 2 weeks ago, and the deer were in the opposite of the thicket, snorting and stomping the ground at me. But they stayed across from me and kept eating while I was picking.

tnshootist, they will be a glossy black when fully ripe. They start green, then go to red, then when they start turning, there will be some "grape" colored, that need 1 or 2 more days before turning black.

I was talking about Jerry's pic. That is not blackberry blooms is it.If so they sure different than what we have here.By the way, blackberries are still red and hard here.It looks like there will be lots of them but they will be small at least the ones near the house,I have not been back in the hills yet.
