Bobcat growling

Ask Dogboy about his growling cat. We had one come in during the day it ran by us about 5 ft away and was hell bent on getting to the Foxpro. He never even saw us but was growling all the way to call. Right up to the point where Dogboy said hello with a load of Hevi-shot.

this one stayed about 75 yards away and wouldn't come out of the brush but was pissed about something for about 5 minutes. it was pretty cool but we couldn't get him out of the woods. after about 30 minutes of trying to get him out we moved on.

On hunting the night shift there is a funny little clip with Randy W and a growling bobcat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif!

The one I shot last year growled at me. but it was because I didn't see it about stepped on it trying to recover it after the shot.

I was deer hunting when I saw the first cat of my life, and that sound really freaked me out.He came up behind me,and I thought he was coming up my tree, which would have resulted in me jumping from my tree and killing myself.
But,he sure looks good mounted on my mantle in the living room. Makes me smile every time I come home.

Has anyone everhad a bobcat come up and growl at them while calling?

Interesting question and interesting answers. What sound were any of you using when the bobcat growled at a calling stand? It seems odd to me that a cat would growl if it was after prey, but would come in silent. I've had cats vocalize in response to cat vocals, but not to prey sounds, but my experience is limited.

I had a cat growl at me in the dusk last year when I went to pick up my M1 and decoy. I'd been on stand almost an hour in a super rough and ragged clearcut in snow on the lower slope of a high mountain. Whatever it was it started with a sound like a hoot, almost bird or owl like, and smoothly shifted into an unmistakeable cat snarl and growl. Two knowledgeable people have told that the sound I described sounds more like cougar than bobcat. Light was going fast and the sound came from a loose debris pile of logs and brush about 40 feet beyond the call. Terrible footing in the slash in snow, or I would have circled to check for tracks with a flashlight. It seemed like the cat growled because I came and took the decoy and call away from him.

I've had lynx and cougars vocalize to me when coming in to a vocalization call. I've called both with prey sounds only and in those cases they did't make a sound though they came in.

I've used bobcat in heat sounds to successfully call bobcats but not heard any vocal response. Very interesting to hear the experiences of others.

We were using prey sounds but we heard some pigs rummaging around a min or two before the bobcat starting sounding off. It almost sounded like a house cat in a fight for a second but much deeper tone then more of just a growl. It was enough to keep us there for 30 more minutes after we had called almost 45 minutes already.

The cat I took came up silent as a ghost, and only growlled after he stopped and looked at me, to see if I would move. Almost like a deer does when he thinks he knows soemthing is not right, and stomps his foot.
Not sure, but it seemed similar to me.
If I can learn how to post a pic,ill show you my mount of him. He is a good sized cat for Tennessee, and his color is great.
I want a red fox so badly, can't wait to find them and be ready when the season opens for them.

That makes sense, that a cat might growl to see how you react when he's not sure what you are.

Post a pic of your bobcat. I'd like to see it. They sure are pretty animals. I'm with you on wanting a red fox. We can't legally call fox here, nor hunt at night for anything. I sold all of the fox (and everything else) that I called years ago, including the most perfectly prime and pretty fur I've ever seen. It was a cross fox and even at the time I thought I should keep it rather than sell it, but can't regret too much as fur sales helped us get a minimal downpayment on our first house.

He saw me and froze, stared, and growled. I did not more. He took 2 steps forward and when his head was behind a tree, I raised my gun, ( 30-30 )and shot him as low as possible, ripping his gut completely out.
Even then he ran far enough, and circled enough,I never found him that evening after 5 hours of tracking. The next morning, I found him with his head sticking out of his den.
If you saw him you would not beleive that he was able to run 10 feet. Must be a very tough animal.
I had never predator hunted before, and while I was tracking him all thouse hours in the dark,I thought a woulded cat might go up a tree. So I was a little freeaked out that he might jump on me. Funny story now,but it was really cool.

Yep had one growl at me this year when I was holding a dead one that I had just pulled out of my havahart trap after shooting it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.It freaked me out cause I was standing there lookin at the cat I had shot and all of the sudden I heard growling.I thought it was the cat I was holding but luckily it was another one starin at me from 15 yards away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifI guess it didnt like me messin with its buddy? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

A growling bobcat is one thing, true it's a little scary. A big old long tailed cat screaming, well get your attention faster then a rattlesnake.
