im new to trapping and have caught several cats the last three years and never caught a female before this week. is there a way to tell the difference without getting a good look between the legs. i hated to kill a female .

How exactly would you go about turning one loose if you knew it was a female?

Don't think one wouldn't jump on you after it was released. If that is even possible without getting sliced to pieces. If you were able to get it out, it might run off. Then again it might not.

Actually, sopts is right Yellowhammer, I turn loose alot of cats if I'm trapping coyotes before cat season, and I turn loose anything I don't think will stretch to around 40". Kittens and small females. With a catch pole it is pretty easy, I have never even got scratched. And you can hold them down with a pole to sex them also if you want to Spots. Just be careful not to choke them too much, it doesn't take much to kill them.

Watch one of Slim Pederson's cat trapping videos.....he releases a ton each year. Not too hard if you know what you're doing and I don't think he's ever had one turn on him.

Take it easy,

Yellowhammer...I let a female go last year and it just sat on the ground and didnt move..Once you catch an animal in a trap and it struggles in it, it wears itself out and almost all of the time it will need a few mins to recover. I have released coyotes and cats and every time it took about 5-15 mins to recover. Releasing a bobcat by yourself is tough but with a catchpole can be done safely.

You might be right. I never tried it, or had reason too. But, bobcats are legal here all through the trapping season.

I have released dogs and house cats. One of those cats was one wild some of a gun. If it had weight 30 pounds I would have just shot it.

Yellowhammer.. I let the bobcat go last year because I had caught a very nice tom the year before and since the one in the trap was much smaller I let it go..Bobcats are neat animals and since we dont have a ton of them I seen no reason to keep the small ones or females. It is better off to release them than to get $50 in my opinion. I also released a coyote becuase I radio-collared one for my study. Here is a pic of a coyote I radio-collared..This yote is just laying there and has not been drugged..this is after it was released.

Did you control him with a catch pole to put the transmitter on?

I have done quite a bit of telemetry work on turkeys, and helped collar a couple of bears, but they were drugged first.

When they came out of it they were ready to leave, but there was somebody with a backup just in case.

Yellowhammer..

I used a catchpole to get the coyote under control. You wouldnt believe how easy it was. Once the catchpole was around its head it just layed down. I have radio-collared turkeys also, but it wasnt as much fun as a coyote.
