bobcat rifle help.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you all think this rifle would sreve for extremely close range bobcat hunting. I like it, but then again, i'm new to predator. Any help would be apreciated. It's a tikka 595 with a Leupold vx-2 3-9x40.

the rifle itself is in .223. I dont save pelts so thats not an issue. I will look at some of those calibers though. I know .22 hornet hammers racoons, will it do the same for yotes?

I don't have much experience with bobcat, but from what I understand is that is doesn't take major power to take em down. I would look into something in the .17 to .22 caliber. A good .17 Remington or a .22 Hornet something in that range. I see you don't save pelt, I don't save a lot of my coyotes pelts either. Our coyotes are pretty rough lookers around here. But, it would seem to me that bobcat hunting wouldn't really make any sense if you were not saving the pelts. Good luck on your gun search.

Thanks for the info, i'll take that into consideration. The reason I hunt bobcat down here is for pest controll. The populations are not real high but they do impact the deer. A farmers daughter got spooked by one of em and now wants them dead. As soon as december rolls around, I need to start shooting. Besides, have you ever eaten coyote or bobcat? It's pretty good.

I killed my first bobcat with a 243 using a 58g vmax. I got him high in the shoulder and it did not exit! But that was extremely lucky!

Heck yeah it's good! I like bobcat well done and coyote a little on the rare side. Dang good!

Bobcats ain't hard to kill, but sometimes they can travel some amazing distances before they realize they're dead. Coyotes too as far as that goes.

If you just want em dead and don't really care if they're recovered, put about any round in the vitals and they'll die eventually.

Thanks for your input everybody. I took my first coyote with a .308 and 150 grain winchester controlled expansion. I expected him to explode, oddly enough, he did not.

Pretty sound advice.

I can be paid for hunting bobcat out here. I don't know any other florida predator hunters so buisness is important as a winter weekend job. I personally don't beleive bobcats to be dangerous but my employers beg to differ. Anyway... the animals don't go to waste so i'm guilt free. I like the .204 ruger but it just dosn't hid hard enough for me. Thanks everybody.

So what wrong with the 223 you have?

If a 17 or 204 isn't enough medicine for cats, then FL must have some big cats, because they all work fine for coyotes, but it's your party..............
