ok i didn't know where else to post this so here we go. i took my bobcat to the taxidermist and usually the boil and bleach them for you but i guess this guy doesn't. anyways he handed me the skull so i am going to do it myself. any tips or tricks i should know about doing this?

Don't boil it, you just simmer it to remove tissue and you do not bleach it, bleach and skulls don't mix! There is a great post at the top of the page with some good information for skulls. I would also search taxidermy.net, there are days worth of reading on the subject. I recently did my first European mount for deer, at the same time I did my first coyote. Both turned out very well. I used the peroxide/basic white mix to whiten my skulls and it worked great. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat, theres even more ways to fix skulls.

Here is a picture of my firsts:

I will be happy to beetle clean, degrease, whiten then seal with paraloid for 30.00 TYD. IF you want it beetle cleaned only I will do it for 20.00 TYD. I have done hundreds of cats and yotes. Any pictures on request.

Thanks! RD Martin

deff, simmer and pick till it is clean to your liking then simmer somemore. You can get everything you need at www.mckenzietaxidermy.com find the 40volume peroxide and the whitner- prob$16.00 total, this will give enough for 10 skulls at least. then mix perox and whitner together like paste, brush all over everywhere, place in furnace room or near decent heat to dry. the heat makes it all react. then after a day or so, I wash mine with the hose and let dry out again.

ya its cheap enough to do it but the shipping is what kills me. i have to overnight it and that cost an arm and a leg.

Andrew, USPS Priority is all that is necessary. Ship frozen and as leakproof as possible. I even get a few shipped ground and not an issue in the Winter especially if wrapped in a little house insulation. I get skulls from as far away as Florida in much warmer weather with no issues. Last year I had a deer shipped from Maine. The only issue with shipping skulls is that blood is not leaking from the box. Postal carriers/Govt. workers and all that. USPS Flat Rate box is the way to go. My price includes return shipping.

Thanks, RD Martin

i have started with skulls in the past couple of months and have found that simmering for an hour or so, picking all the meat and stuff off, simmering again until you get all the stuff out and then simmering in clean water with dawn dishsoap to get all the grease off works well.
then drop the skull in a plastic coffee can and fill with regular peroxide until completely covered, and let soak for a couple of hours. pull out and let the parts dry overnite. works well and is cheap.
i then mix up some clear epoxy to spread on the backside of the teeth to keep them in and to set the jaw in place.
