Bobcats in daytime

How often has anybody called in bobcats during the day? Does it happen much while calling coyotes, or is it best to focus on them at night?

We can not night call in Oklahoma but I call a couple in every year while calling coyotes. I've had them come in during the middle of the day before. I think I'd call more if I took longer at a stand. In places that produce cats, I usually call for at least 30 minutes or I try to make it the last stand of the day and call till it gets dark.

Same time and place and method as coyotes. Rabbit distress- after a few minutes- there he is sitting and staring at you.

we call the majority of our cats during the day.Same basic technique as with coyotes for the most part.
If I'm targeting cats I'll set up closer to cover.

The Cats seem to be everywhere during the day this year. Since July we have called in almost a dozen during the daytime which is really abnormal for us. Last year we called two during the day and those weren't until November/December.

My opinion is that you call just as many bobcats in the daytime as you do at night you just don't see near as many.

At night a cats eyes are a dead giveaway. their camoflage and stealth during the day makes them tough to spot. If your going to call bobcats during the day the best tool you can use is an electronic call placed away and to the side of your position. This way when the cat responds he will have the cover he uses for his stealthy approach between him and the call and not you and him. You will see many more cats like this. Another thing to consider while attempting to call bobcats during the day is to give them some cover from which to make their stalk. In other words....don't try and force the cat acroos large openings. He operates but stalking his prey. Give him something to stalk with. If you don't you will have lots of cats hung up where you may never see them.

I'd much rather call bobcats in the daytime. They are an awsome critter to watch as they stalk the call.

Often see them mousing open ground between 11am and about 3pm, then they disappear until night. I think they know the coyotes are out-of-service usually in that timeframe, and their time can be better spent mousing, and not defending or competing for food, running, etc. When the weather turns colder that mid-day window will shorten, and be they come out in the warmest part of the day, to greet any mice, moles, rabbits, etc that adhere to the same schedule.

Come to think of it, Ive only killed two at night. All the others were in early afternoon.

Here is one I got last year. It took about 45 min to gether out. The yellow line is how she came in and the red X is where I dropped her. She hung out in the gully in front of me then came in hard with her tail twitching the whole way. I used a Syco Tweety and a Death Card Calls closed reed jackrabbit. Knocked her down at about 10 yds. Best feeling in the world.

If you are targeting cats and are able to hunt them at night (which I know you can in NV) that is the most productive time to go. You can definitely call them in during the day, if you set up near one it will probably come on in to check out the noise, sometimes they come trotting right in. Most of the daytime cats I've called have come within the first 5-10 minutes so they were probably pretty close when I started calling. I've called and taken way more cats at night, I believe they move around more at night and will come a greater distance to the call at night, also with those eyes it's tough to not see one approaching.

here is one that came in a couple weeks ago.

John in CA, I've killed lots of 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift bobcats. Bobcats are more active at night by nature, so that would be the best time to hunt them.
If a hunter can only hunt during the day he or she has no other way to go but to hunt the day shift. Bobcats can be found or called at anytime during the day but the action is usually not as good as the night.
I think coyotes and bobcats have alot of respect for each other. I don't think any coyote in it's right mind would take on a bobcat.
I also don't believe there is any special time during the day except maybe early mornings or late evenings animals that would be more active, they are always hungry and well take advantage when they can....Just my opinion.

Called in 3 during the day a couple of weeks ago.Called in 33 last season and all were during daylight hours. Here in Oklahoma there is a big difference in where you set up for a cat versus coyote. The key is to call in or near heavy cover.

The hardes problem you will have calling bobcats here in southern Nevada during the day will be seeing them. The only one I have seen while day calling have been the one in Rachel last weekend, one in Oklahoma last year with OKhunter and I didnt even see it untill he shot it and one in AZ with GS. All of these were seen because of the cover and terrain made it possible to see them. Lots of cover here in So. Nev. Makes em tough to see in the day.

i might add to Byrons method is to add somthing for the cat to see some sort of decoy. I have seen 3 in the day light in the last 4 years just wasnt calling and had no gun. i have called in 5 so far this year at night butt alass they are not in season so didnt shoot them.

Called in plenty of cats during daylight. They sure come in slower than a coyote. Many times I've had cats come in on stands at the end of the day. There are places I want to hunt, but can't get to them without a lot of exposure. So I'll walk further than normal and set up. But I wait maybe a half hour before calling. By this time it's approaching sunset, and I'll call all the way to dark.

I don't put this kind of time into very many stands. Some locations are just too exposed to walk up and do a 15 minute set. So I'll spend the time and effort. A high percent of these stands pay off.
