Bobcats in Oregon??

For the past 3 years I have been out there in every possible weather condition hunting for coyotes. While I have had some fair success learning the coyote game, I have yet to even see a cat. 30-40 minute stands, lots of brush, bird distress sounds, no howls, yet, nothing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I am beginning to wonder if there really is a decent and huntable population of bobcats in Western Oregon (I have a West Side Tag only) I would appreciate any comments from Oregon Hunters or anyone with a better idea! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Thanks and Happy Holidays, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a relative who does pretty well on bobcats. He spends alot of time in the mountains over here on the eastern side. Looks for country that has lots of ground cover and snowshoe hares. Waits for fresh snow and sets up in areas after he locates tracks in the new snow crossing logging roads.

My son and I took a nice 30 pound male out of a creek area just out of Vernonia about 2 years ago. He has seen one on two different occasions down on a creek area around Astoria this last Elk season, but it was not the Bobcat season.

A guy i work with had two bobcats working over his chickens out in molalla.

They shot one a big male.

I know their around i was hoping to get a fix one where there is snow on the ground.

Rustydog: I feel your pain. I have been calling for years and have never called in a cat (that I saw). I saw one on the side of the road while driving but that is it. My goal this winter/spring is to get a cat. Good luck and let us know when you get your first, I will do the same.

Thanks to all for your encouraging words! Of course, I will continue to give it my best shot, especially here in Western Oregon (the brushy side of the state).

The funny part of this frustration is that my wife, who only hunts deer, not critters, has seen two on her daily walks around our suburban area! She can't understand why I'm such a "failure"!

I'm headed out tomorrow, maybe that will be THE day.

Lots of cats on the west side. A buddy of mine hunted hard during the Tioga elk season and saw more bobcats than elk. Even when you do call them in they can be hard to see.

Although i have not hunted bobcats i have seen a few over the years on prairie mountain in the alsea unit while deer hunting. The maybe 3 or 4 that i have seen on prairie mountain have been very skittish and they did not hang around very long after i spotted them.I suppose that using a call you might be able to get them in close but when you combine the low numbers with the type of terrain that they hang out in i am not sure it would be worth the time.

Rustydog, I work driving a transfer truck down in Roseburg and one of our drivers heading into our pit to get rock actually had a bobcat run out in back of his truck to cross the road heading into the pit...I guess the cat didn't notice the reach of the trailer and hit that and got caught in it and that is where he died. Our pit is right on the edge of Roseburg and actually might be in the city limits.

But I have not seen any others up there but do know they are around down here.

I will ask around to some guy's I know who run dogs and get out around the county a lot and see what they know.
