bobcat's in trees

at least an hour or two after the hounds leave. JK

Actually a good question I have wondered myself. I don't think I have ever herd of them going up into trees other than to avoid danger. But I have no clue.

I think they get in trees to get roosting birds cause alot ot times when I'm going thru the woods following the bear dogs I see where something has killed and eaten bluejays and that's the main type of bird we have here in the woods during the winter JMO. Mike

Recently heard a story about one in a tree. No particular reason, just lounging. Sombody spotted it and ran home for a gun. Stayed for over and hour... cost it its hide.

Seen them in trees in Texas to go after roosting turkeys.

When young turkeys are spooked, they fly into trees & stay there, heard of bobcats going up after the young ones as well.

I cornered a young-small bobcat one day & it went directly up the nearest tree as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It stood there on the limb looking down at me, & it's momma came back & sat down & watched me....I resumed by fence building, & left them in peace. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

As far as seeing them just climbing a tree for the hey of it, or hanging out in a tree, I've not encountered that myself.

I agree with what was said above.I think most of the time a bobcat will only climb a tree when they feel threatened. But I wouldnt doubt that one would climb a tree just to hang out and have a look around but I could be wrong.I've never seen a bobcat in a tree before though.
Last year a buddy of mine was quail huntin and his dog treed a small bobcat.

Back in the 70's my grandpa was either pheasant or quail huntin and he shot a bobcat out of a tree.Right as the first bobcat hit the ground a second one jumped onto the same branch and was dropped shortly after. He said they were really nice greyish/blue colored bobcats but my grandpa didnt know how to skin them right. He said the fur buyer about crapped his pants when he brought them to him and he didnt get as much for them as he should have.

A guy I know saw 3 of them in a tree last year but I dont know why they were up there.Just hangin out I guess.

This is'nt a bobcat story but its pretty funny.About a month ago a buddy of mine told me that a feral cat was on a telephone pole and had been up there for 3 days.So we went out there and looked at it.That crazy thing couldnt get down.I have a picture of it that i took with my cellphone but its not a very good one.You could tell it was bored out of its mind just from the expression on its face. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am still laughing at what SalemDawger said /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. That was the funniest thing I heard/read all day. Thanks for making this day a good one JK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

Back in 1998 ever morning I sat in one deer stand during deer season a big bobcat could come down out of a tree 30 yards from my stand. I watched him 6 different days. It was always 15 minutes after sun up he would come down and disapear into some thick brush. I tried and tried to call him in but never had no luck. Then 2 years later a coon hound pup I was training treed a cat in that same tree.Im guessing it was the same cat.

While Bow Hunting in Florida several years ago I had a strange thing happen. I had seen a Bobcat moving through the bottom and watched him disappear into the Palmettos. After a while I caught movment below the Oak tree I was set up in. When I looked down I was looking right into the eyes of a big Bobcat. We shared stares for a few seconds and I ended the stare down bye woofing at him. He took off with light speed.

I believe that the Cat had passed by me & then caught the movement of my head as I watched the trail for Deer. He then proceeded to stalk me until I establised I was the Alfa Male. True Story!

I was climbing up in a treestand one morning... The head lamp I had on spotted some eyes, which i assumed were an owls.... After I was about half way up the tree i noticed that owl had turned into a bobcat he was on his way down. He went down the opposite side of the tree and i just held on for what I though was gonna get ugly. He got to about three feet above where I was on the opposite side (about 14-16 feet up, and jumped down to the ground and took off. I don't know what he was doing up there, wasn't a turkey roost or any birds nest around.

Have shot one out of a tree one time, it was chasing a hawk or an owl but I don't really remember. They do hurt the turkey population though, wherever you find roosting turkeys in Texas you find cats.
