Bolt Action AR for NY no go

Called the NY State Police Hotline today to find out if an AR style rifle in bolt action is now legal in NY. The Law says that if you can modify the gun permanatly to remove the banned options then it will not be considered an "Assult Weopon". So I thought as many have said just remove the Gas system and block the ports on the barrel. Here is the problem: The FFL controlled portion of the gun is the Lower. This in a sense is the Base Unit of the gun. If this Base Unit can be easily modified back to Semi Auto then it is not legal in NY. In the case of a bolt action AR all you need to do to bring it back to semi auto is replace everything above the Lower. The officer also said that it is Illegal to purchase a Lower in NY. So for now even my Bolt Action AR is on hold.

So using that logic, the FFL controlled portion of ANY semiauto rifle with a detachable magazine is the receiver. Since you could easily put that receiver on an aftermarket stock with a pistol grip or thumbhole stock,or collapsible stock, wouldn't they all fall under the "assault weapon" category? Are they saying that all semi-autos are now assault rifles? I don't like where this is going.

They think they can interpret the law anyway they see fit. I'm gonna guess quite a bit of BS comes from that hotline that wouldnt hold up in court.

I'm interested in the reaction of gun owners next year when they have to line up to register their outlawed guns. I'm betting that it won't be pretty for the government thugs.

Really? That is so stupid. I was planning on doing the same with mine. I cant wait to get out of new york.

As stated above, I think court cases will knock a bunch of this back for you guys, but probably won't happen till AFTER the registration deadline. What about these more conventional bolt-action uppers that fit onto the AR lowers -it is no longer a semi when that happens.

It would depend on how they wrote the law. The last time they banned AR-15's, Colt just changed the name.

Sounds like the roads heading south out of New York will be clogged this year. If any liberal Marxist plant is reading this I have a house I'll sell you along with some firewood to start out next winter with. We can negotiate on the log splitter, but I guess those types aren't used to that type of work.

LMAO!! What are you saying, liberals are prone to not gain calluses on their hands???

The M1 Garand people got screwed also as the 8-round enbloc clip must have 8 rounds in it to load rifle. The only thing I hate more than stupid politions is,----- I can't think of anything.

Nothing will happen. The Masters will find a couple of examples and have these plastered all over the stoopid box. People will meekly line up.

I think you underestimate the resolve of people who's constitutional rights are being violated. I hope your wrong.

Believe the law is about the purchase of and mag size limits. Nothing about the use of. If you own it already its legal to use from my understanding with 7 rounds max, 5 for hunting..

Well it's legal for now, til DEC changes the regs and says you can't use a semi auto for hunting at all...which could very well happen, and they don't need legislation for it either.

Well if your not allowed to purchase one,can a friend lend you one for ANY extended of time? Are people from others states allowed to drive across lines with one to hunt without any leagal issues if they are still legal to hunt with? Out of state hunters? I know we get alot of out of staters here in PA and I don't believe they have to go through a bunch of crap to bring their guns over the stateline to hunt. I could be wrong, but never heard of any such thing. Also how would that law prevent people from crossing lines and buying AR type guns? Those laws make a legal right law obiding citizens seem like criminals in their eyes. I would think the other way. The ones who are the criminals are the ones who place such laws and try to enforce them. They are the true criminals.
