Boot Care

What's your secret to taking care of leather boots? How do you prevent the leather from drying out, cracking, etc.?

Wax,I have been using Nikwax for years and many top boot makers have recommended it. Some have it private label like Danner did. Now my Meindl's list it. Nikwax offers a cleaner if you need it but I don't use it. Then they have a waterproof application good for gore tex to apply before the aqueous wax. The boots look great with many compliments.

I've started using Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP or Leather Oil depending on what the boots are used for. I use oil on my work boots because you can polish over it when necessary and the LP on my hunting boots. I really like it so far. It's easy to apply and seems to really last.

Snow Seal here for me.

I apply a good coating, then take a "heat gun" or "propane torch" and melt the wax. Then the 2nd coating and re-melt.

Then a light buffing with brush or cloth, you should be good to go the whole season.

A good Mink Oil boot dressing will also work good.

I like Nor V Gen boot grease in the flat can and Snow Seal, both waterproof nicely and the leather keeps it's shape. I do use Hubert's also on moccasin, softens the leather alot but does a fair job of waterproofing.

If I get a pair of stiff leather gloves the Hubert's softens them nicely if the gloves are soft I use Nor V Gen as leaves a tacky finnish.

I like Obenauf's and Nikwax and have used them for years with great results. I hear good things about Montana Pitch Blend but have never used it.

I use Obenaufs also. Use it on all my boots and it keeps them in good shape. I am going on my second year with my Georgia Romeos and they look as good as new. I figure I will wear out the soles on them before I wear out the leather.

I have to make another batch of 'beaver oil' one of these days. You take clean beaver fat, melt it down filtering out any particals. Looks nice & very oily.

you have to keep the oils in the leather replenished, and if they are gor-tex you should only use the LPor one that okay for gor-tex and you cannot heat them or it will contanimate the gor-tex and it will leak

Thank you all. What is the concern with gore-tex? I have Sno-Seal, is that ok to use with gore-tex? I was leaning away from it since I'm not looking for waterproofing. I just want something that prevents cracking and keeps the leather supple.

I now use obenaufs also. It's safe to use with goretex.I used sno-seal years ago on a pair of Sorels. It worked ok until my feet sweat and then they froze! Sno-seal clogs the pores of leather so it don't breathe.Try Obenaufs. It will do what you want.
