Bootheel Bobcat

Nice Kitty you got there Larry,
he looks like a pretty big one, last year was the first time I had ever seen one in the wild here in Missouri and I ended up calling in and killing three of them. Can't wait for nov 20 this year so I can try for some more. the neighbor stopped by yesterday to say he had seen one at the end of my driveway the night before.

tell us the rest of the story on your cat, time of day, call used, rifle used you know, that kind of stuff!!!!!!

I set up on an old rail road trussel that crossed 5 ditches. He walked the rail over two of the ditches, never set foot off the rail. I had to let him step off the last bridge before shooting. I didn't want to go for a swim to recover him. Both bobcats and coyotes use these trussels to cross the ditches. I was playing a distressed kitten tape, at 9:00 in the morning. I let him get about 30yds before shooting.
He made a really fine mount, but it didn't do him justice. The taxidermist ordered the largest form available, and it still didn't capture his size. I have been keeping my eye on some of his cousins, I know of three that will go over 40 lbs. Just waiting for Nov 20.

Hey guys, it's nice to see a few more Hillbillies on the site! Be sure you get down to the "Eastern" section and join in on the discussions we currently have ongoing about "Calling Tactics & Techniques" and the one about "Bobcat..."

Larry what was the weight of that cat? I've taken a few that seem to be that size or perhaps just a notch bigger. I've also taken a few smaller! I spotted the single largest cat I've ever seen a few years ago and it was the daddy of them all to me. A big old dark gray boar with long legs and a barrel chest, really impressive. BTW, I drove down your way to Hornersville Swamp once looking for a few rabbits to jump. It seemed a perfect day, except we didn't jump one rabbit in five hours of trampling those ditches and patches of cover.

That is a great cat Larry and welcome to the board.

Hey GC,
Just where are you located if you drove to Hornersville??? Have relatives there.

I didn't know the bobcats got that big in the big Mo? nice cat. That cat looks like it is in the high 20's or low 30's, what did it weigh???

He weighed 34, after he bled out of course! I forgot to mention that I was using the .243. I dropped down a bit to a .223 for the kittys. If every call up could be as close as this one, I would stay with the .22mag, but I got tired of the downwind coyotes keeping their distance. I really lke having the speaker as far away as possible. Anyone that hasn't taken a bobcat is welcome to come to Kennett and look me up. If I can't take them out, I could show some good spots for hunting. A few of the farms near ours have been leased by The Dept of Conservation. It is a project for restoring wetlands and hardwood forests. It is the ultimate terrain for predators. This area is about 7 miles from Hornersville, MO. Contact me at mac1@semo.net if you are passing through the neighborhood.

I've only seen 2 Bobcats my whole Life in missouri And they were together sunning under a tree on a friend's farm... they Were pretty Big. Can't say for sure wince we only had a 4x scope but i know they'd weigh over 30 they were pretty plump..... What are all you other missouri guys using to call w/ That brings them in good? I can call in the coyotes but i Really want a bobcat or a fox pretty bad ya know.

Very nice cat Larry. It looks heavy alright. Good job, welcome to the board.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

SteveM,
I'm quite aways from the bootheel. I'm about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis in the far northeast corner of the Ozarks. We drove down to SwampEast Missouri on a "hot tip" promising fast shooting on cottontails. Didn't pan out at all and the 150 mile drive was a wash out.

GC,
Just wondering!! That was a long drive! I travel up through the St. Lo area on 70 when I am heading out West for hunts. That is some nice country up there.

70 west from St. Louis doesn't showcase the state all that well in opinion. Missouri is nearly two different states, from north of the Missouri River the topography is flatter, open, with lot's of crops and farms. There are some stands of timber scattered about with a few rolling hills, but nothing like the Ozarks. Get south of the Missouri River and look out! A couple of million acres of public land in steep Ozark hills, heavy timber, lot's of beautiful clear, fast running streams. Some large lakes to spend some time on in the summer. To my eye, this area of the state is the crown jewel.

I started deer hunting down Fort Leonard wood area, got my first deer there too, just love that country, Don't care for the chiggers though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I hunt deer, turkey, coyotes mostly up north now, fish down south.
