borescope "wow"

I finally picked up a Hawkeye borescope and all I can say is wow I should have got one a long time ago. I just scoped one of my 22-250's and after cleaning it using my normal routine (wipeout or Butches with a nickle plated jag ) I cleaned it untill there was no blue on the patches and was very surprised at how much copper was still in the bore, this was a factory barrel but the most accurate one I own.
I was also surprised at how little fire cracking was in the throat/bore of my 20br after almost 500 rounds compared to a 22-250 at 500 rounds the 20br had only a very small amount around the throat and the 22-250 was about 6 to 8" of the barrel ahead of the chamber and I was pushing both of them pretty hard.
I think this is a great tool well worth the money compared to what some people have tied up in firearms

I suspect some things you see may not add up to what you would expect, ie a good shooting gun may have the worst barrel quality compared to lesser shooting guns.

Which model / length did you get?

This is absolutely true. It is enought to drive some guys nuts, too. Suddenly a perfectly good rifle has "problems" after looking through the borescope.

A prime example would be Savage rifles. Most shoot pretty well, but don't look inside that bore if you are gonna be bothered by tooling marks......

Years ago, I stopped a guy from stealing a borescope out from under the table of Hawkeye's display booth at a trade show. Actually, it might have been an unlocked display cabinet. I can't remember. They were already gone, and the show was over. I called them up and told them what I did, and warned them not to leave their stuff unlocked in downtown Detroit. Or anywhere, for that matter. I barely got a thank you out of it.....

I dont buy one simply cuz I wouldnt be able to handle it. It would cost me a fortune in new barrels if I bought one. I just wait till they quit shootin straight.

I have a CZ .204 that I bought from a friend that developed some health and financial issues...I've known him for over 25 years and he's always be fastidious about his cleaning habits...

I was having problems getting the accuracy out of the rifle that I had been getting out of my Savage and went to a local gun builder and he was nice enough to borescope the rifle for me...He reported that it had about eight inches of carbon build up from the chamber forward....Took a lot of scrubbing with Osso to get where I thought it was clean...I later applied some Butch's Bore Shine and started getting dirty patches again and it hadn't been shot since the bore scope...I need to take it back for another look, or buy one myself....

If you have used metal polish before I am sure you know to expect black on the patch while using the polishing compounds.

Once you decide you are done, with solvent patches to clean out the goop you will see many black patches before you see a white patch...

I work in Rochester about 1 week a month on average, and found out Hawkeye is 3 blocks from a BBQ place we visit once on every trip. I called and got the feeling they didn't want to show me their product as much as I wanted to handle one before buying.

IMO, if you have a great wife who keeps a clean house, kooks well, is good to the kids and remains entertaining in the bedroom, NEVER ask her about her sexual past.

Kind of like running a scope down a good shooting rifles tube. You're not going to be happy with the results.

I'm a firm believer in that stuff also. Makes cleaning much easier.

Rich44, where did you pick it up from?

Did you get the model that you can use with .17cal?

I keep telling myself, once I liquidate some arms, that a borescope will be my next purchase.

My only concern then will be the hours I spend in my gun room trying to clean out my "dirty" bores.

Savage should include a bottle with every rifle they sell.....

The first thing I would buy is another borescope.

Jack

Just curious, if someone stole all your rifles and your borescope, and you buy a new borescope first, what ya gonna look at with it?

I bought a borscope 2 yrs back and you are all right when looking inside seeing some of the copper mining bbls and thinking why is it shooting so darn good with that crud in there.
When Im out at auctions or looking at used guns I take my Hawkeye kit with me.

I picked it up from Midway and yes its the deluxe 17" slim it fits in .17 barrels I think I should have got the 22" one though or got the angled eyepiece, that would work much better with stocks with a higher comb or scopes that are set farther back
