Bouncing Berger Bullets??

A friend of mine says he won't use Berger bullets because they ricochet to bad. I, personally, have never heard of this or seen it. Is he full of crap or have any of you seen or heard of this? pyscodog

I use Bergers in almost every rifle I shoot with the exception of my Stevens and my AR. I have never had a problem. Personally, I think he's very full.

Berger bullets are harder than most in my experience. They don't expand like polymer tips. Based on about 20 groundhogs. For me they acted like full metal on hogs but I don't remember how fast they were going. .243 Win cartridge.

The fact they are harder may mean they hold together after hitting dirt. Bouncing or ricocheting.

By default Berger bullets are made with J4 jackets. While they are very concentric and uniform, they are not known for their undue strength. I would question your friends hypothesis.

I have never had troubles with them. I feel they are a great quality bullet.
Heck just about any bullet has the possibility of a ricochet given the right set of conditions.

Debating with him is like arguing with your spouse. I just gave it a "What Ever" and went on. He claims its happened many times. I agree with you koh. You can skip a rock if your angle is right.

I have shot a [beeep] of a lot of 22LR and have heard them buzz off into space and they are just plain old lead bullets.

Any bullet will ricochet under the right circumstances. Harder the bullet the more apt they are to ricochet.

Just cause you don't hear them or see them ricochet dose not mean they did not.

I don't think anyone is arguing that it does not happen. I think the argument is about it happening more with Berger bullets.

That is what I was thinking.

John

That is exactly right, John.

This is a very vague subject to try and discuss.

I have shot untold thousands of ground squirrels, p.dogs, and chucks. All bullets bounce with the exception of some 17's and even the 25g Rem and Hornady HP bounce.

If you want bullets to bounce less, then shoot a very fast twist and/or shoot the bullets VERY fast.

Pyscodog, I started shooting the 55 gr Varmints last fall at coyotes and had great results with them. Almost all the dogs were "bang flop". I would give them a try, they also group great.

I talked with my buddy again tonite. He said he was shooting ballistic tips cause the won't ricochet. All I said was OOOOOOOOO-K!! Its not worth argueing about it. I too feel in a given situation, any bullet will bounce.
