I went out hunting this morning with a couple of friends on a public hunting area that is near where we live. The game plan was for us to do a couple of stands for coyote so I could show off my FX3 as neither one had ever been out with an electronic caller since the old days of cassettes. We would then do a few sets for crows since they seem to be pretty thick this year. One of the guys took his Britany Spaniel as she is trained to retrieve crows. Doesn't like retrieving them in the least but does it. She runs in with a crow and drops it as soon as she gets within arms reach and then tries to spit a couple of times. Funny to watch.
We set up on the first field just at dawn and I worked the caller on and off for about 30 minutes. No takers. We got up and started walking cross wind to the next field about 500 yards away. Got to the creek dividing the fields. The dog was about 50 yards in front of us sniffing at something along the edge of the trail when all the sudden she starts yipping and comes running back to us. At first I thought she had hurt her foot cause she was running in on 3 legs but as soon as she turned you could see where she had been shot with an arrow and her guts were coming out.
Three guys come walking towards us. Bowhunters. Dan gathered his dog up in his arms real quick and me and the other guy split all the gear up so we can get back to the truck in a hurry. The bowhunter was spouting something about thinking she is a stray so he shot her but we ignored him.
Got the dog back to the truck and were just started into town when she died.
Rough day for all of us.
Bad time when we got to his house. The dog was 11 years old and like a child to them. No kids so you know for them she is one of the family.
I can understand shooting stray packs of dogs. I have had run in's with a couple thru the years and it is a bad deal. Shooting a bird dog on a public hunting area is a whole different thing.
