Bow Hunter killed my friend's bird dog this morning

I went out hunting this morning with a couple of friends on a public hunting area that is near where we live. The game plan was for us to do a couple of stands for coyote so I could show off my FX3 as neither one had ever been out with an electronic caller since the old days of cassettes. We would then do a few sets for crows since they seem to be pretty thick this year. One of the guys took his Britany Spaniel as she is trained to retrieve crows. Doesn't like retrieving them in the least but does it. She runs in with a crow and drops it as soon as she gets within arms reach and then tries to spit a couple of times. Funny to watch.
We set up on the first field just at dawn and I worked the caller on and off for about 30 minutes. No takers. We got up and started walking cross wind to the next field about 500 yards away. Got to the creek dividing the fields. The dog was about 50 yards in front of us sniffing at something along the edge of the trail when all the sudden she starts yipping and comes running back to us. At first I thought she had hurt her foot cause she was running in on 3 legs but as soon as she turned you could see where she had been shot with an arrow and her guts were coming out.
Three guys come walking towards us. Bowhunters. Dan gathered his dog up in his arms real quick and me and the other guy split all the gear up so we can get back to the truck in a hurry. The bowhunter was spouting something about thinking she is a stray so he shot her but we ignored him.
Got the dog back to the truck and were just started into town when she died.

Rough day for all of us.

Bad time when we got to his house. The dog was 11 years old and like a child to them. No kids so you know for them she is one of the family.

I can understand shooting stray packs of dogs. I have had run in's with a couple thru the years and it is a bad deal. Shooting a bird dog on a public hunting area is a whole different thing.

One of you should have stayed behind to collect names from hunting licenses. And maybe a cell call to the warden. Now you have no recourse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

What that bowhunter did was illegal, big time. Here in Montana, that guy would be in deep trouble. I am very familiar with the law in that regard. Your state may be different. Here, only LEO's or a livestock owner (dog harassing livestock) on his own property can kill a dog. It is illegal for anyone, except a LEO, to kill a dog running wildlife. In the same situation, I would have gotten names or vehicle license numbers. That bowhunter is subject to a civil suit. What a shame. Sometimes it is best to use a little restraint before shooting something, which that slob did not do.

Woulda Shoulda Coulda... Very sad. Would feel better to make them face the music, which they definately deserved, without question, but I understand leaving Dodge in the presence of armed idiots. Very sad. Sorry.

In a time like that, we don't think of things like that. Your concern was caring for the dog and comforting your buddy.

No matter what, the dog is dead and nothing can change that. I know it would be nice for the guy who shot it to be in trouble, but it won't bring the dog back.

Karm is a real "bleep". He will get into trouble with his wrecklessness...hopefully it won't be shooting a person though.

This is very sad though. Sorry to hear he lost a friend and part of the family.

Man, I'm so terribly sorry to hear of that happening. Send my regards and condolences to the family, if you would please.

THe "hunter" (I hesitate to use that term) who shot the dog should not only be jailed, but he should lose his right to own a bow, knife, or any type of firearm for the rest of his life. There is NO room in our society for such a reckless individual. He was undoubtedly one of those who talks a big game, and acts tough, but is scared of his own shadow. Not to mention his lack of intelligence. Wow. That just chaps me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Although steps could/should have been taken at the time of the incident to make a identification, I think that I would still call the local warden and let him know the situation. If deer season is still going on, perhaps you could ask him to take a trip with you back to the place that it happened in hopes of possibly finding the guy there hunting again? Not likely, but given his lack of intelligence, it is highly possible.

if someone shot my dog...i would have beat the holy he!! out of him..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I could not even imagine what I would of done. Sorry for your loss,

Here in Wisconsin the archer would also be jailed, no one is allowed to shoot a dog. DNR and LEO are the only ones, and trying to get them out there takes an act of congress I have heard. I guess I would not jump too fast about it either, but under some circumstances I guess it has to be done.

That archer should of known better, I have had stray dogs come thru the woods before, and I honestly never ever thought of shooting one. I was more worried about the dog flushing a bird and me getting shot at. Plus being as close as he was he should of been able to see that is probably wasnt chasing deer. Stray or not it is still someones buddy.

My brother got the tag number and Dan (the dog's owner) works for the Oklahoma Dep't of Land Management. We talked to the Game Warden at his office and he made a couple of calls before telling us it is strictly a civil matter.
Not sure where it will go from here but whatever happens won't bring back his dog.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

Strictly a civil matter? Sue the hell out of him! That's BS and I would be severely [beeep]. In fact, reading the story and thinking of my eleven year old beagle and all we've been through with him... I'll tell you this. If it happened to Bullet there would certainly be a criminal act committed, and I would be committing it all over that s.o.b.'s head and shoulders! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

"if someone shot my dog...i would have beat the holy he!! out of him....."

I'm so sorry for your lose, I know the feeling, I had a dog shot in rifle season 2 years ago.

Ditto...if I would have been the dogs owner that guy would be hurting [even tho thats the wrong thing to do] this made me sooo angry/sad just reading it b/c I have a Brit. too...along with a chocolate lab, aside from my girlfriend these dogs are my LIFE. And what makes me even madder is that I am a very serious bowhunter, this gives all bowhunters, all hunters for that matter a BAD name, just more full for the antis... And what makes me even madder is that I am a very serious bowhunter, this gives all bowhunters, all hunters for that matter a BAD name, just more full for the antis...
There is no excuse for this sh!t ...sue him for EVERY last penny..

He would have a bow sticking out of his posterior if he shot my dog.

My thoughts as well!!!!! On both of these comments!

Sorry to hear about the dog.It really makes me sick to know I am sharing the woods with people like that. What public land were you guys on if you don't mind saying?
I hope the owner follows up and sues the heck out of the guy. okhunter

I don't know your laws but it doesn't sound strictly like a civil matter to me. Have him do some research on the laws. Most states have laws protecting dogs except under extreme circumstances.

That's why when these threads come up about people shooting dogs that come to their calls I get so pizzzzed. Those "strays" are often times someone's beloved pet. As much as I hate to see dogs running loose, I'll never shoot one. (it's obviously different if they are causing damage to wildlife or threatening people.) I don't even shoot cats running loose. It could end up being some little girl's favorite one and it would break my heart to think I killed her pet.

This guy was no bow hunter,he was an idiot out in the woods with a bow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif.I'm sorry but not having kids,my dogs are like my kids to me.And being a little dysfunctional /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif,I don't think they would like the results if I saw one of my dogs trailing his intestines behind him running to me.I'm so mad right now about this, just tell your friend I am really sorry for his loss and if He needs money to hire a lawyer to sue the idiot,I'm willing to kick in a small amount.God Bless and take care, daveyboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Actually, you need to have a report filed with the local sheriff's office, or other governmental agency (i.e. city PD if within a city limit). Once this is done, they have recourse as what can be done. Shooting a domesticated animal can be a felony under the animal cruelty statues.

Also, this is a lot better if he decides to persue it in court, which should be done. You have the tag, so the hard part of identifing them is done.
