Box call chalk?

I have a ? bout chalk for my box call. Is it alright to use chalkboard chalk or sidewalk chalk on my call? I thought maybe I read somewhere that it's bad for the call.

I am using the same piece of chalk I got about 20 years ago. It is blue and comes from the hardware store. Carpenters chalk. It comes in a cake and looks like a ball that has been cut in half. Break off a piece and wrap it in a tissue paper then slide it in a pill bottle. the tissue will keep it from rattling as you walk.

Don't use chalk that has wax in it. Chalkboard chalk does have wax in it. The wax gums up the surface of the wood and your call will lose its ability to make the right sounds. The regular box call chalk designed specifically for calls is so cheap and last so long I don't think anything else makes much sense.

I was told that the chalk used on chalkboards also can contain oils as well as wax.. The reason behind oil and wax is to keep the chalk from screechimg in the chalkboard while writing..

Now if you take into consideration that the screech is what you are after, it makes sense to get chalk that is designed to work with a box call.

Blue may not be the best choice of colors in todays hunting world as it is one of the colors of a gobblers head while in strut.

Combine the blue color with the hen calling and you may very well have a novice shoot your call that you just happen to be holding. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.

The box call chalk is brown... James L.

I use the blue carpenters chalk, I would not worry about the blue on a box call, it is on the bottom of the lid.

Actually it all depends on how you hold the call while using it as to which way the lid is pointing.... lol...James L.

Very true, I usually hold my box at a strong vertical angle. That would have the blue chalk flashing and visiable as I run the call. My "dedicated" box call chalk is brown, and I also have some green.
