BOULDER, Colo. - A 7-year-old boy hiking with his family was attacked Saturday by a mountain lion. The cat was later killed by a wildlife officer.

The mountain lion bit the boy's head or jaw, and the child also suffered puncture wounds or scrapes on his legs, likely from the animal's claws, Division of Wildlife spokesman Tyler Baskfield said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was apparently the last in a single-file line of seven other people taking a short hike at a scenic area of Flagstaff Mountain, Baskfield said.

"The father turned and saw the cat had a hold of the young boy," he said. The group began screaming at the cat and throwing rocks and was able to free the boy, he said.

The group was 50 yards from a parking lot when the cat attacked, Baskfield said.

The boy was initially listed in stable condition at Boulder Community Hospital. He was later transferred to The Children's Hospital in Denver, Baskfield said, but he did not know the boy's condition.

An officer fatally shot the cat early Sunday in the same area of the attack, Baskfield said. It was killed in the interest of public safety, he said.

Baskfield said the mountain is prime habitat for the cats, and there had been several recent sightings of mountain lions west of Boulder.

"This is a very rare incident to happen," Baskfield said. "Mountain lions tend to be very elusive. Typically mountain lions don't want any part of people."

Good thing some of the boys family had the guts enough to fight it off. I read a letter to the editor once where the writer said,"it was wrong to prevent a lion from taking your child. If the lion was hungry and needed to eat, that it should not be prevented from doing so". People like that should be taken to the zoo and thrown in the cage. We will continue to see more of these kinds of incidences.

What kind of moron would say that? Could you imagine hiking with your boy and a lion attacks him and you just explain to him that he is going to be eaten because the lion is hungry??

What kind of twisted mind would even think such a thing.

Moron is the right term that's for sure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

the dumb a$$ that said that just simply need's to be smacked, or taken up on a mtn that is loaded with them, then have a few deep cut's done on him so he has the smell of blood floating around. that way a cat can come in and eat him just to see how he like's the idea. but then the cat would have to be killed since once they get the tast of blood they say they will want it more. stupid people are becomming more and more every day.
i hope the kid is ok how ever, i hate to hear thing's like this.

A mountain bike site that I look at actually had some moron that thought it was great to not be at the top of the food chain. I wish him luck.

Yuup i too hope the young hand is OK.

And as usual "-->what greg223 said!"

I saw once were a hiker who loved the bears was attacked by two sibling bears,he fought for his life for about a half mile. The bears just kept pursueing him -he fought w/big sticks and softball sized rocks to the face of the bears and was able to bluff/fight his way out.
He stated he would carry a gun from now on.Mike

Yes i to hope the boy is fine, and to who ever wrote that letter I hope they are the next person to get eaten by a lion. I also liked the zoo idea as well

Some people have mush for brains, or simply refuse to live in the real world. Remember a year or 2 ago when a lion was treed by a Lab in a residential area of Palo Alto, CA just a couple of blocks from a school? Because of the proximity to people, especially children, the cat was shot. Animal right’s types, who visited the site dressed in morning black, accused the dog that treed the lion of being a traitor to the animal kingdom. No kidding! It was all over the news.

Seems that liberal, gay promoting, bunny hugging California mentality is spreading like a bad virus everywhere.
Hope that kid gets better and has no bad mental hangups from that attack...Walt

Bob Mc,

That beats all!!! Initiate "gag reflex"!!

I heard about the shrine they built. If I had owned the property that the cat had been treed on ....... the very tree where a small child had been swinging in just moments before the cougar was discovered ...... I would have ran off those idiots so fast their rear ends would have been smoking for weeks ...... and some bite marks matching my dental work there as well.

Then I would have built a shrine for the prudent response of the Palo Alto cops!!!!!

Some people are a waste of "good skin"!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Boulder has a long history of Mt. Lion attacks. In fact there is a great book, The Beast In The Garden that discusses why Boulder has such a problem. I live in Mt. Lion country and spend a lot of time in the woods. Rarely do I go out without at least a pistol. I have only seen three Mt. Lions in the wild. Each time they were crossing a road and each time was at dusk. Aside from the length of their tails, the size of their paws and the obvious power behind those paws sticks in your mind. Fortunately they were happy to leave me alone.

If you allow ANY major, large predator to go unhunted for several generations in ANY area they will start looking at humans as food.

If you hunt these same predators they'll start acting like prey. I want to be at the very top of the food chain and I imagine most others here do too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

All across the country they've stopped most large predator hunting and these predators will become increasingly bolder, and more common, until we, the predator hunters, are asked/allowed to thin the herd again. (Keep yer' powder dry and your calls dusted off).. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't imagine they allow lion hunting anywhere near the liberal capital of Colorado (Boulder).

Sorry the little boy got hurt and our prayers go out to him.

This may well be where the poor hunter ethics takes over. If you are caught start crying and yelling "I thought it was a deer." Why did you shoot it three times. I thought it was a tough deer.
