british .303

hello all,
I went coyote hunting last weekend with a friend and boys i am hooked already. My question is if a .303 would make the grade as a yote gun. I do not have the money to buy a new gun right now. Just curious of the pros and cons of this rifle. I also have a .17hmr and a 7mm, and numerous shotguns. I figured the .17 would be to small and the 7 to big. Just looking for some feed back. Thank you all in advance.

Sure it would. The .303 British is no ballistics miracle maker, but it can be capable of respectable accuracy to 200 yards and beyond with a decent scope. My hunting buddy has a customised .303 Brit that will shoot very respectable groups with 174 gr Hornady Interlocks.

My 303 was very accurate with open sites, I imagine it would not be too fur friendly, but it would work well in the elimination department.

I have taken out my Enfield it was great and certaily passed muster. I dont sell hides or thing like that just go out for fun and help the farmers out. I handload a 174 grain Sierra MatchKing HPBT. It is about the only bullet i have found that i can get consistant groups out of.

I say if its what you got Take it out and have fun.

Like most large bores, it's not particularly a good idea to use in areas where ricochets can be a problem. But, if you're capable of putting the shots inside a coyote's chest at whatever range you intend to shoot as a maximum distance, it will work.

There are scope mounts available for many of them, so if your gun can shoot decent groups beyond iron sight range, consider getting a mount and
scope for it.

Ballisticly it comes close to but is not quite the equil to the 308 or 30-06. It will drop a yote out to two or even three hundred yards if you do your part, years ago I had an Enfield Jungle carbine MK five I think. Being young and dumb then I did not handload, I was able to get mil surp ammo for a few cnts a round it was all FMJ and did a good job on yotes with relitivly little pelt damage, but that was back when the pelts brought ten or twelve buck each, to them stinkin critters were worth skinning.

I have a Jungle Carbine with a scope on it that will shoot honest 2" groups anytime and ocassionally quite a bit better. It shoots 150 gr. spitzers and 174 gr. RN equally well. With the 150s at around 2500 fps a yote inside 200 yards would be in harm's way. I haven't shot a yote with mine but it's a DRN deer killer, for sure. Sounds like fun - I might have to take mine on an outing for yotes sometime. Our average shooting distance is about 60 yards anyway when calling. We should all probably recall that a cartridge with ballistics like the .303 was at one time considered a very flat-shooting smallbore rifle.

John I think you get get scope mounts from Cabela's. I think that's were my buddy got his from. If you not hunting for fur then why use your 7 mag? It will probably be more accurate and have better ballistics. You will also be able to reach out there a little farther. You may not be able to take long shot where you hunt but where I am from here in Texas long shots are an everyday thing. Just my .02 cents.

P.S. What part of Oklahoma are you from?

i am up in the northeast corner, a little town called claremore. Mainly shorter shots, 60-150 yrds. I dont particulary care about the fur, but will probably skin them out, i am a coonhunter and can always use some practice, ya know.

I have the B-Square no-holes mount for mine. You take the flip up rear sight off and install the mount. It's easy and has held zero fine for several years. I just have a 3x Leupold on mine - a slightly more powerful scope would help with groups but the 3x is great for woods hunting.

thank you all for the advice, i am going Saturday morning and see what i can do. I have not had a chance to get a scope mount for it so i will be shooting iron sites, i shoot ok, so not real worried about yet. A couple of misses may change my perspective. I will let you all know. I also painted the gun, it turned out awesome, my brother thought i had it done professionally. It only took me like 20 minutes to do. thanks again.

I picked up an Enfield about 2 months ago for about $150, it was in nice shape. It is a 1943 Maltby. So far I have put about 20rounds of .303 through it. It is really a neat old gun and it sure is fun to cycle the bolt on it. Ammo in .303 for 20 rounds seems to be pretty affordable too.

Johnb, did you camo paint your Enfield? I would like to see that.

hey knhunter,
yep it is camo'ed. I just bought two cans of some camo ultra flat paint at Wal Mart, i painted the whole gun in the lighter color then got some pine needles and laid over it and went over it lightly with the darker color. Looks good i think, not trying to brag though. I will try to get a picture of it this weekend, hopefully laying across my first dead yote. ive got it to shoot about 2" groups at 100 yards with the iron sites, i rarley will get a shot much longer than that here so all i need to do now is see one.
