Browning 270 A-Bolt?

Once again, I need to draw on the experience of others.
I went by the local gun shop today, and was enticed by the sales person behind the counter (a friend of mine). They have a few A-bolts left, and are selling them for $499.00. I know that is a good price, but, I've never owned a Browning. The one I want is in .270 Winchester. How well do they shoot? How much trouble is it to lighten the trigger? Do they come with a floated barrel, or, will I need to have it done? How is the action bedded? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Thanks for the help guys!

I have one and it shoots very well. That is a good price. Lightening the trigger is a 5 minute job and will cost you about $10. Action is bedded (a little) and the barrels are free-floated.

I do not have the answers to your tech questions such as bedding, or trigger adjustment and that is because none of that seemed to matter on my Wifes 270 A-Bolt. Her rifle will shoot every thing very well, and it was purchased years ago when they apparently came from the factory with a good trigger pull. Every bullet/powder combination that I have tried with this rifle has been acceptable at worst to very good. The only rifle I have ever worked with that I can say that about. A couple of my friends have A-Bolts also and are very pleased with them. I recommend that you buy.

I have a 30/06.Have taken a many of deer over the years with it.I've killed them from 25 to 300yds with it.It shoots a factory 150gr fedaral bullet so well I have never even thought about working up a reload for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have one in .280 stainless stalker. I have shot both Elk and deer with mine.My brother has one in 30-06. They just plain shoot right outta the box!We put in a timney trigger spring to lighten trigger pull but you really don't need it.IMO Oh yea I forgot I have a .204 in a A-bolt also. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif That A-bolt .204 I have I think was a shot show special as they only made em for a year.Better gobble up that A-bolt cause they shoot well and gonna go with a X bolt I think.Try the Federal Premium in a 130gr. in that .270 and I think it should do what you want.

It took me about 5 minutes to lighten my trigger on my BOSS'ed .270 Win ABoltII to where I like a big game rifle.

I bought it over a decade ago at WalMart at 6:30 AM one Sunday morning when I'd gone to pick up a tube of toothpaste. I walked out without the toothpaste.

I've fired 33 shots at 32 deer with it, at ranges from 40-376 yards. 31 of these deer dropped to one shot, while the other received a "finishing shot", which turned out to be unnecessary, really.

I like it...a lot. While you're not supposed to admit to having a favorite "child", I'd probably admit on my death-bed that this one is mine.

Good price. Get it. You won't regret it.

How'd you adjust the triggers? I could pull a truck out of the mud with mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It is actually very easy, take the action out of the stock and flip it over. Look at the back of the trigger assembly and there will be a screww with a spring around it. Turn that screw in to adjust trigger pull.

Timney also sells a replacement spring kit that comes with 2 different weigh springs if you would like to go lower. Out of all the A-Bolts I have done didnt need the spring kit, all of them were fine was I lowered the weight.

Hope this helps-Tim

I adjusted mine the way Tim described and thought that I wanted more. I bought the Timney spring kit, from Midway I think.

The 'lightest' was too light for hunting but would be nice on the bench, and the 'lighter' felt better than the adjusted out factory spring.
