Browning Bar MK III .243

I was wondering if anyone used a Browning Bar as a dedicated coyote rifle? Was just throwing around the idea of a BAR in .243. I know they are lighter than most AR-10's and of course hold less ammo but I think 5 rounds or so is a plenty.

If the 243 works for what you are trying to accomplish, I don't know how you can go wrong with a BAR. There isn't a finer gun out there for that price and you will get bolt action accuracy.

I have one in 270 win, exclusively for coyotes. Wish it was a 243! It's in the shop right now. Im having cycling and firing pin issues. I use mine a lot. I try to baby it as much as I can, but I like it a lot. Im trying to find the magic .277/coyote bullet. I started off with the 110 vamx. Tried 135 SMK, 130 Bergers, most were accurate, but not a DRT either. Currently running a 90 sierra HP. I have only recovered one so far for an autopsy. Not enough data to go with as of yet. Next will be the 110 Sierra.
Just realize it's a good idea not to run max loads all the time. These aren't bolt actions. Lucky for me I have a LGS that have ex-Browning employees working there. Watch the videos on youtube on how to disassemble and reassemble. Not like an AR!

BAR Lightweght Stalker .243... For several years I killed the heck out of Ozark critters with that rifle. From crows, feral cats, stray dogs in the chicken pen, possums, coons, skunks, groundhogs, fox, bobcats, coyotes and deer. Amazingly accurate and dead nuts reliable. It has a bigger brother, a steel frame .30-06. The 06' is just as reliable and accurate. The BAR's are a bit on the chunky side and have a spongy trigger. If you don't mind the portly size and shoot them enough to learn the trigger they're "meat guns" for sure.

Bumping this thread, this rifle is in the mix for me and I was wondering if anyone else has anything to say about it. Reliability and Accuracy are the two big concerns. I've read their accurate but it also needs to run, i'm spoiled by my AR which as no problems.

Kimber, did you ever get your problems resolved? What was the cause/fix?

I'm in need of a lightweight set-up for tracking deer, been using an ar10 platform and i'm sick of it. Too heavy and makes too much noise in the brush. Was debating going bolt since it's the lightest out there but i'd really hate to give up repeatability which you need up here in the north east where it's super tight and brushy.

I'm seeing this MK3 with the aluminum receiver is around 6lbs. 10oz so scoped and loaded I should be able to get this right around 8 lbs. Still on the heavy side for what i'm looking for but that's reasonable. Bolt gun I wanted something around 7 scoped and loaded, top choice for that right now is the Savage 111 LWH which is 5.5lbs out of the box.

Current set-up is 8.4 lbs. bare bones and just over 10 scoped and loaded.

In 30 years of gunsmithing I have worked on a few. Anything mechanical can and eventually will break but I have not seen any inherant weak spot in them. The biggest issue I have seen is cleaning, especially the gas piston. I have seen them so carboned up that they were stuck solid in the tube. I have never owned one but almost every time I worked on one I wished they made a lightweight in .223. Keep the piston clean and it should last longer than you do

Great to hear from someone that's worked on them, thanks!

I've got a BAR Lightweight Stalker that I've killed ten deer with in the last two years in front of the hounds. I shoot the Copper Creek .243 87 grain Berger VLD. I've been very pleased with the Accuracy of this gun. Also impressed by the way the round performs.

I bought the rifle used and it needed a good cleaning.

Is that scoped? Did you ever weigh it by chance?

I’ve got an older leupold vxiii 3.5x10x40 on it. I’ll try and weigh it this week. It’s not light but nowhere near the weight of an AR-10.
