Browning vs Ruger

Which gun would you chose a browning (any model) or ruger (any model) Just want to see what all big game hunters think is the better gun and why. This is biggger calibers only .243 and up

Wis_Sharpshooter,

I personaly would have to say Browning. After owning both, Browning just has more features that I like. First it has a 60 degree bolt through very much like the Weatherby. It has a tang style safty right behind the bolt. And it comes with a detachable magazine. I owned a A-Bolt SS with Sights in .375 H&H I put Leupold Quick Detach Rings and Basis. I had a Leupold shotgun scope with the heavy Duplex in 2-7 power. This was my Alaskan Gun, and Man it shot great. The Reger I owned was a MarkII in 7mm Rem mag. It shot good too, just like the features better on the Browning. Good day and happy hunting

DOGGITER,

YOU MEAN U WHERE UR AT BROWNINGS ARE MORE THEN RUGERS?!?! BOY I DUNNO WHERE UR AT.. BUT MOST NEW RUGERS AROUND HERE RUN ANYWHERE FROM 600-800$, WHILE IN MOST CASES U CAN GET BROWNING FOR AROUND 400-500$!

I have a Browning A-Bolt (Medallion) in 280 cal. and another Browning A-Bolt (White Gold Medallion) in 270cal. I also Have a Ruger M77 (RSI) in 270 cal. All I can tell you from using them is the Brownings are much more smooth on the actions. The Ruger is "tinny" feeling, not smooth like the Brownings. We also have A Remington 700 ADL in 260 cal. That is by far the worst of the deer rifles that we have. The action is not smooth at all. but then again you only have $325. in it. I'm not sure where the other guy is getting Brownings Cheaper then Rugers. But if you can...grab the Browning every time! Price on these was $675 for the Browning 280 cal (1993). $975 for the Browning White gold ( My son's Graduation gift) (2003) and the Ruger was $565.(2001) I could have got the regular stocked M77 for less money but I liked the full length stock. Thats my feeling on them since I have both and hunt with both.

PPH,

Don't know what to say, but the MOST expensive place to buy a Ruger here is $500ish. The Browning's start at $500. Then again, Wally World has Weatherby Vangards at $400ish.

Wis,

Even though it wasn't on your list, I'd take a Win M70 whatever the "pre-64" model is. Like most other things gun related, it's what makes YOU happy. Of your 2 choices it would come down to safety location and how it mounted (the priority).

Here in Michigan, anywhere you go brownings are by far more expensive than the Ruger. The Gander Mountain right down the street from my office has brand new Ruger M77MkII's for $479.99 and the plane Jane Browning A-Bolt Hunter is $100.00 more. Then you get into the Stainless Stalkers and they run in the high $600.00's and into the $700.00's depending on weather it is a Magnum or Non Magnum +/- the Boss System. Happy and Safe hunting.

I don't think that there was a production type rifle ever made that compared to the workmanship and looks of the Brownings that were made in Belgium years ago. The model 70 Winchester's prior to 1964 were also a piece of fine workmanship and quality.

I paid like $300 dollars for one back in the early 1960's...it shot well under an 1 inch group with 180 and 200 grain bullets back then.
They don't make em like that one anymore. It was listed at around $900 dollars two years ago I believe. It's nice to buy something that goes up in dollar value instead of down as years go by.

I would choose the browning. Better quality I think. About the price?? When I bought my browning A-bolt 7mm-08 I also bought my wife a ruger 77mk2 in .243 at the same time. The browning cost me around 200 bucks more. The browing's trigger is also a hell of a lot better in my opinion. I'm talking straight from the factory though, not customized. The bolt on the browning is smoooooth as glass while on the ruger it seems rough and sticky. all in all, in my opinion the browning is just a better rifle.

I'd buy the Ruger, Controlled feed, manual ejector, made in America. I do not care for the magazine/floor plate thing Browning does.
Get a trigger done on the Ruger and the only draw back is gone.

Remington, hands down is better than both.

But we all know what opinions are like! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I like the Remington BDL/DM models in Stainless Steel. I use a 25-06 for deer and pig.

I use a 22-250 VLS/SS for the little targets!

What he said. In the current production I like the Savage for value and Win M70 for fit/comfort/quality. As another price point, for some reason the Win, Weatherby (economy models), and Rem M700's are all slightly cheaper than the Rugers locally at the moment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif It'll change this summer/fall.

Grimel.......I agree that Savage does make for the most part a very accurate rifle out the box.
In the last 2 years I have seen and fired several at out gun clubs range. The Savage is a working mans, no bells and whistles kind of a gun that will serve the hunter well.

However, I have currently been a model 70 Winchester man for several decades. I have stocked up on the model 70's ever since they brought back the action and rifle that made Winchester what it was in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

You just can not get all the value in a production type rifle, as there is in a model 70 pre-64 type gun. The big claw extractor is must if hunting dangerous game animals, along with the control feed action. The 3 position safety is the best in the industry....a real safety! One that blocks the firing pin when unlocking the bolt, enabling the hunter or shooter to extract a live round from the chamber. Knowing it will NEVER go off from the firing pin accidently striking it on the primer.

The Remingtons although stylish and accurate, are prone to breaking extractors. I just don't care a lot for "push feed" actions. Their safety has been a maga problem for years and they just settle out of court. The 700's action is great in my humble opinion for a bench type gun, it's accuracy has made its self known for years.

The Ruger is my second pick in a hunting type rifle! It has like the model 70 Winchester, a control fed action, big claw type extractor, and the important 3 position safety.

We have to stop agreeing like this, people will start talking. I have a Savage 7mm RemMag because it was the first LH bolt I was able to find and it just fit. The accuracy (this is an 80's vintage) just floored me. At the time it was $200 less than a Rem 700 and shot with my buddy's 270.

Couple of years ago I found a LH Win M70 Featherlight in the modern Pre-64 costruction. Love at first touch. Been looking for a 280/30-06 on and off ever since.

Count me in on the Ruger vote! I like Savage too, not much to look at but that way you don't have to worry as much about knockin' around with it and man do they shoot! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Browning hands down winner
Distant second would be Savage
Third Ruger
Forth Winchester
Fifth Remin.... wait, I'd rather bow hunt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif HOYT

My buddy has his FFL's and purcahses guns for my friends and I, he orders my Brownings for me so I can get them at wholesale prices. Even at wholesale prices I couldn't come close to being down to Ruger prices! You can probably expect to pay 550-750 for a Browning rifle of the size your talking about (Depending on Series)... the Ruger would be 400-600 in my area.

If you've got the money then Browning is worth the extra expense up front.... If you're feeling thrifty Savage is better than many guns that costs twice as much.
