Buckshot Chokes

I read the shotgun pattern thread, but I was wondering.. I just got a box of Winchester super-X 3in. 00 Buck (couldn't get anything smaller) each shell has 15 pellets. I own a Benelli Nova 12ga with a 24 inch barrel.

What Choke do you all use for 00 Buck?

I found my .670 and .690 choke tubes were about equal with OO buck. 4 Buck shot tighter with the .670 tube. Both were Trulock extended choke tubes.

I get some scary patterns with 3" federal power shock 00 out of a nova with a extended range patternmaster. It's 100% in a 30 inch circle at 50 yards.

I have always found that 00 Buck patterns pretty well from an Improved Modified constriction. That is what the Patternmaster actually mikes out at most of the time. That makes them pretty fair for 00 Buck, but usually give poorer results with smaller shot. BTW, just my thoughts but I would be much more concerned with a 12" circle at point of aim than a 30" circle. Unless perhaps something much larger than coyotes were the intended target. A 30" vital area is a pretty big critter!

I have heard some fantasitic things about federals flight controll wad. I have used it for ducks and honestly think that no matter what choke you put it through its way to tight.

I noticed that they are now packaging buck shot with the flight control wad, which would be a great thing. As far as I know its not availible in #4 yet, only larger sizes. But once availible I'm stocking my selves with it.

Your correct. I wouldn't and can't legally use oo on coyote.

I dislike the Flite Control wad and most of the hunters I know that have messed around with it feel the same way. Flite Control can be picky as heck to get good patterns from. Most extended chokes have a wad stripping feature of some sort and usually blow patterns from shells with Flite Control wads to far, wide, and beyond. I haven’t found a turkey or predator load with Flite Control that patterns well from extended chokes and it won’t out pattern something like Hevi-Shot or Wingmaster HD for me with quality extended chokes. Now with that said, my duty shotgun is stoked with Federal Premium 00 Buck with the Flite Control wad as it slightly out patterns other buckshot with a standard factory type improved modified choke. The difference isn't much really, certainly not enough to extend the range significantly. But it is a quality shell and there is the slightest bit of a better pattern so that is what I use for personal defense and duty. But overall I am not a Flite Control fan.
