The canadians and aussie do alot with the 303. There are a few wildcats on the 303 case in Cartridges of the World. I had an Epp's built .35-303 back in the mid 70's come through my shop, awsome looking gun, one piece stock and all surplus metal gone.

I think you could spend a lot of time and money on this rifle and it may not shoot as well as a gun that’s build on a better action with the same effort. For one, there is not a lot of bedding surface to work with on the Enfield, and to get the trigger down and crisp will be another major challenge not to mention the lock time seems like a decade on the Enfield, it just does offer have any of the characteristic or potential of making a very accurate rifle.
You can spend a lot less for a better gun.

I figured it's gonna be a pain, but I got'em both for $75,then I did some looking up an found they are about equal to a 30-40 krag,so I'm gonna do sum'thing with one of them. They shoot fair now,I ain't got a clue how to adjust the sights yet.But everybody keep up with the suggestions maybe we'll hit on something that works.Oh anybody know a GOOD gunsmith, the ones around here aren't that good.I know I'll have to have it rebarreled and have to reload for it.Got new reloader from Santa,so maybe by the time the rifle is done ,I'll have figured out how to use the reloader /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

What action designation are they? I have seen the MK 1 in 308, and some Mk5's in 45-70. I never saw but was told about one that a "friend of a friend " had in 22-250. But like I said I never saw it. IMHO it will take a bit of a hunt to find a good gunsmith who will want to work with one as they may take a lot of machine work on the bolt. I have had a couple one in .303 and one from the Ishapour Arsinal that had been rechambered in .308 back in the late sixties.
It was a Mk1 Model 3 When the ex comonwealth countries were all trying to go to NATO standard by reworking the surplus arms from WW2 and Korea.
I uses the Enfield i had years ago thet was a MK 3 Model 5 or something it was called a Jungle Carbine but anyway I used it to take a few deer in AZ but the Coues deer are not that large either. HAd a heck of a time back then, 1965-1968 finding soft point ammunition for it. That was when i started handloading and bullet casting. I soon went to more traditional American Calibers because of the ammo headaches. The 308 Ishapur I had was also the Jungle Carbine configuration. Note that both of these are in past tense I gotr them came to the same conclusions about them and got rid of them. They are OK if thats all you have but I feel that there are much better rifles and ammo out there for little money if that is why your buying mil surp. For a build I would look for a Mauser action myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

In Australia they did a lot of wildcats on the .303. From what I remember off the top of my head is that the actions were not all that strong for high pressure loadings, maxing out around 45K. They had some luck with .22-303's but it was the pressure limit I mentioned that stunted it's popularity. It was the .25-303 that was the most popular, and I recall this because I looked at a lot of wildcats when I was doing research for myself.

This doesn't help you with finding a gunsmith in the States but might get you going in a positive direction. If it were me and I was set on making a project out of what you have it would be a .25-303.

Why?

Because after you put your money and effort into building this rifle, if it wont shoot accuratly enough to be an acceptable 200 yard varmint/predator offering odds are that it will shoot well enough to handle medium game rifle to about that range.

There is enough bullet selection in .25 cal to cover both genre, and the nice thing is that if it works out you would end up with a truly versatile piece.

Good Luck,

The 303-25 is the only way to go, I have a mate who had both a 25 and 270 on the 303 case. The 25 was a very popular pig gun in its time. There were many wilcats made I still have load listings for the 22/303 sprinter, 22/303 Swift, 22/303 Falcon, 243/303, 25/303, 270/303 and standard 303 British

I only have standard millitary 303's just to collect.
