Building off a savage action??

How many of you guys have a gun built off a savage action...I am really considering a 17 remington..I have a savage 223 that I picked up for under a 100 dollars.Just wondering if it would be worth putting together a 17 remington off this action..I was thinking a Lilja barrel with a McMillan or something along those lines ..or just buy a cz or ?...light weight 17 remington is what I am looking for strictly a calling rifle...thank you for your time..

I have a few rifles put together with a savage action and they all shoot very well lots of options now for barrels and stocks.

A good choice IMO. I have 2 LH actions & 6 barrels. You get yourself some good tools & some experience & you'll be good. Savageshooters.com is the place to be.

I can't stand them. I bought two and then my bank account drained and I ended up with ten extra barrels. They are in profile that Ritch designed for BHW with a bit longer straight area in the shank. They shoot out of this world. The change the barrel yourself thing is like a godsend for a gun junkie. The price is also right. I have them from 20 Practical up to 300 Win Mag so far with a 22-243 on the way soonest.

I started swapping pre-chambered barrels on Savages just before the first pre-chambers I ever knew about hit the market (the maker sent me some samples to test). About 20 years ago.

Can not be beat for bang for the buck of a pre-chambered Savage barrel accuracy and tinkerability.

That said... You mentioned Lilja. I haven't kept up with the market, but I don't think Dan makes Savage pre-chambered barrels? If he does, ignore the rest of this...

But it sounds like you are planning to have a custom barrel chambered, not buy a pre-chambered.

So, here's the thing. If you are going to have to have the barrel chambered anyway, as I believe is the case with a Lilja, it's not any harder to swap on a 700 than a Savage. Easier, actually. As the barrel will be headspaced correctly to begin with, you just spin it on and off. Which is actually a bit easier than dicking with a barrel nut. Having the lug pinned makes it easier still, but a pair of witness marks on the lug and action and it's pretty dang easy to do even without the lug pinned.

But... Easy as it is to swap barrels on a 700 - that are already headspaced, it sure ain't as cheap as buying a pre-chambered barrel for a Savage.

Anyway... My opinion, if you are planning to have a custom barrel that is NOT pre-chambered, done up for an action, might as well pick something a bit smoother and "nicer" than a Savage. Especially for a trim .17 Rem. That's crying out for a Model Seven or a little Sako or something like that. But, now we've left the land of bang for the buck far, far behind... But when you mentioned Lilja and McMillan, and lightweight .17 Rem, "bargain priced" and "Savage" are not what I'm hearing, either.

Well, why dontja? Several years ago I wanted a full size varmint rifle in .221 Fireball. Ordered me an Adams and Bennett Furball barrel from Midway ($100 on sale!) borrowed a set of go/no-go gauges, screwed it in the M12 action that I had and presto! Because I already had the stock all I had to do was mount a scope (got plenty of those) and sight it in. Then several months ago I got to jonesing for a .243 AI and rather start from scratch I just got me another bolt from Midway (on sale, natch) got me the new barrel and wham bam thank you ma'am I'm done. And if I want to go back to the Furball now it is a 20 minutes (taking my time) swap. How neat is that?

If you can find you a nice uses Stevens 200 then you can do it on the cheap. And if you can build you a gun for a very few hundred bucks that will shoot like a $1000 one, all the better, right? That's right.

Oh, and thumbs up on your .17 Remington thought. I have sent many a ground squirrel into orbit the last few weeks with mine. If today was not Mommy's Day and not spending it with The Boss then I would be out there right now doing it some more instead of writing this!!

I put this .243 win together of a model 12 action with a Lother Walther barrel, savage stock and a Bushnell 6500 2.5x16 scope it will put 87gr V-max's into a 1" dot at 200yrds.

My safe only accepts Savage rifles/builds.
Ive done no less than 41 builds on those Savage actions since the early 80s.

when a gunsmith sets the headspace on a remington 700 I suspect they run the reamer in an check the headspace with the barrel installed on the action.

my question is why happens if the headspace is a tad short. do they pull the barrel from the action, reinstall into the lathe and run the reamer deeper or do they just grind more off the shoulder of the barrel shank aka the part of the barrel that touches against the recoil lug.

I wonder how much headspace differs on a random remington 700. I wonder if its less than enough for a company to just offer prefit barrels like savage does. further I wonder if that dimension could just be adjusted by different recoil lugs and what effect just grinding a recoil lug to fit would do. just some random thoughts. I like being able to change my own barrels. Thats one reason why I have taken to ar 15's do much.

Are you planning on doing this yourself or having a smith put it together for you?

And this many should know! Listen to him on this one!

I was, thinking about doing it myself but it is sounding a lot harder then I thought...this would be my first savage, put together or build whatever you want to call it...I wonder if I might be better off to just purchase a 17 remington ....

My complaint is two fold:

First: I converted a SA blind mag, stagger feed Savage 223 into a 243 to use for hunting. I love the gun and it was very satisfying doing the barrel swap myself but now I can not find a synthetic stock with a stiff fore-end. Bell and Carlson discontinued their short action model. The one made by Hogue is heavy. And a McMillian stock will cost me over $600.

Second: I am not of a fan of the new detachable mag Savages with the bolt release located in the trigger guard. I own one and it is a shooter but the bolt release seems rinky-dink to me.

Have you looked into H-S Precision?

Yes I did. All I could find were tactical type stocks. The one hunting type stock they had was for a heavy varmint type barrel and I have a sporter type bbl.

The model with AccuStock with detatchable mag is what I'd build on. The AccuStock is plenty stiff.

I agree on the aftermarket stock options. I have a model 12 I'd like to tinker with, but there aren't any reasonable synthetic stocks that are stiff.
