Bullet pulling to get components for reloading 9mm

Cannot find 9mm + P 115 gr FMJ ammo on this planet. O.K. I'LL just reload my own. Wrong! Cannot find 9mm brass on this planet. So I'm thinking on buying Winchester 115 gr ammo and pulling it then reloading it with Alliant Power Pistol to + P specs. Never pulled bullets before. Is this approach doable and what puller would do the job on 9mm 155 gr FMJ? This is for 9mm AR with 16 in barrel. Looking for 1200 - 1300 fps.
Thanks, Bakerboy.

If you are looking at a few rounds then go with one of the less expensive kinetic (hammer) devices. This approach will do in a pinch. It is likely that you can even get away without resizing, but you will need to let the bullet tension in the new loaded round dictate this.

If I were you, I'd go buy the Hornady "Cam Lock Bullet Puller" (#050095). Don't forget to also buy the Collet for whatever caliber you intend to use it for. It is used just like a die in your press and is as smooth as silk. I think I saw it either on sale at Midway or in their "Clearance" section. I use mine all the time and it works so much nicer than banging the snot out of a live round to get the bullet out and spray powder all over the place.

I just checked Midway and it's off sale now, but available for $19.99 (just the puller). The collets come in bullet diameter size and frankly I don't know what the measurement is for a 9mm.

I'd buy brass on GunBroker,ReloadersAuction,or AuctionArms, or other brass sources. 9MM once fired brass is everywhere
and not too expensive. Plus I'd buy bulk bullets from places like here:http://polygunbag.com/bullets.html
and load them myself. Scroll down to the bottom for 115 gr bulk bullets on sale. I don't think 1200-1300 fps is plus-P velocities in a 16" barrel. More like 1400 plus a little with 115 gr bullets. I can get 1200-1250fps with 124 gr. bullets with a not maximum charge of Unique powder in a 16" carbine. You should get 1200fps and more with factory loaded 115 FMJ's in a 16" barrel.

bakerboy, If you can find some locally,,,, Check out the Ramshot Silhouette powder...

Checking their data, I've found I can use that powder in different quantities for my 9mm, .40s, and 10mms...

I'm currently waiting to get to the range to test some 9mm loads (probably tomorrow)...Fortunately, I have plenty of supplies for everything but my .380s..

I will agree to getting the Hornady cam-lock bullet puller, over the kinetic puller, if you need to pull more than a dozen bullets...It's so much easier, especially on your wrist, if you are having to pull very many...the 9mm is the same as a .380 dimension....

Is there any reason to not just shoot the ammo up to get the brass (and some practice in)?
Advantages; don't need to buy any equipment, will get some practise in, a lot less work involved.
Disadvantage; might loss some of the brass.

Don't get me wrong, your method is doable. Just stricks me that shooting the factory would be an easier way to do it.

Now, there you go. Taking the easy way out again.

Just for ur info, I just measured the diameter of a 9mm bullet and came up with .350. As Jack pointed out a .357 collet should work just fine. And I reload ammo often using factory ammo and the brass is usually good stuff and can be reloaded many times over so long as you don't get the loads too hot. Repeated hot loads just reduce the life of casings no matter who the manufacturer is.

Most 9mm bullets are .355" and most 38s and 357s are .357". There are a few exceptions but they are a tiny percentage you will probably never see in your lifetime.

Yes, it's the .357 collets that are backordered at all of the major sites. I was able to purchase them direct from the
manufacturer. I've never seen so many items on backorder. I assume stores are just letting inventories go because of the economy.
