I went burl hunting... I mean cutting with Bobby and Elizabeth his daughter this morning. He had already spotted them. Man this guy can find a burl!!! These Hickory Burls came off the same tree. Here are some pics.

Brad, At least we can post pics of us with burls on days the coyotes don't show /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Dang, I can't believe how good that wood looks. I thought the burl was impressive, but after you cut it on the band saw I am speechless! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Awesome burl, beautiful wood! Elizabeth said going burl hunting with Brad was great /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Been checking for pics for the past few hours and I can't stop looking at them now! WOW!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

WOW Those will be some beautiful calls /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
WIll you seal them all over now? Do you leave them in the bin with it closed? I know it will depend on alot of things, but, how long do you expect them to dry before they can be turned?
I'm full of questions today /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've got my eye on a couple burls. Just wanting to do everything right when I cut them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Tell her I had a blast too Bobby! She's the cutest little thing!

I'll leave them in the tote and open it wipe the moisture out every day until water quits coming out so fast Dusty. I didn't seal those in the tote, some is in trash bags. The large one and some larger pieces I anchor sealed. Yep there's that much! I'm telling you I think Bobby can smell a burl from a mile away! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif There has to be 30+ board feet of burl here. The one's in the trash bags will be emptied every day (that I remember) and the bag turned inside out. It make 'em dry sloooow, and keeps 'em from checking up. Nothing like bringing in a good haul and loosing 1/2 to checking. (done it before) Then I inquired the same questions to a burl supplier. After they quit loosing water in the bags/tote they will be removed to air dry. Just have to make the 1st step slow and easy on it. The stuff that is anchor sealed will dry slow through the bark.

Thats gonna make some outstanding looking calls and I'm a sucker for any kind of Burl wood calls. To bad none of you guys live near me I know were several Burr oak trees are with huge burls.

That is going to make some great calls. The only burl I may have seen around here is Aspen, I would like to see what it looks like.

Good looking haul there Brad. I can only imagine what that burl will look like after you have put your special touch to it. Keep up the good work, and that wood should be dry in about a year or so. Cooper17HMR

Got more than I bargained for Casey! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Cedar burls can look pretty good!

Found this Aspen burl on the net. Looks darn good to me!

Have a little trick up my sleeve to speed it up Cooper17hmr! After the slow treatment, (when it's most vulnerable to checking). I sneak it into the house, (she catch's me but I still get away with it...spare room) I sticker it and in the winter with the low humidity in the house it's like a kiln. I'll start out experimenting with a couple pieces to make sure it won't check up.

Adda boy Brad! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I am a wood hound as well. Always got my eyes open for any good stuff I can lay my hands on. I just wish I had your bandsaw to cut them with!!!!

Brian

I just bought that one Brian! Man I love it!!! Cut my waste way down. Nice to be able to put a 12" thick piece up there and slice it to dimension. They don't give the blades away though. It's always fun to cut the burls off and see what's inside, some are unbelievable!

Bowl/vase turners inlay with turquoise and other materials. (Nothing to do with the wood) I meant to say something about it when I posted that pic up, didn't mean to be misleading.
