Anybody use a FastFire2 on a huntig rifle? I have a Marlin 444 I am thinking about putting one on it to hunt in the trees for elk. Interested in any results that anyone would have with something similar.

Coloradocat,

I will give you my two cents...for what its worth....:)

A few years ago I mounted a red dot sight on my muzzleloader for a cow elk hunt. Red dots are much easier to shoot than iron sights and while sighting in the rifle I was stoked.

I got into a decent herd of about 40 elk in the timber. The timber was not thick and they were about 75 to 100 yards away. When I put up my rifle...I was worried about shooting a spike. I had to go back and forth from my binoculars to my rifle to make sure I wouldn't shoot a small bull by mistake as the elk were moving a bit. I did get my cow.....but I put a scope on it after that hunt. The red dot is easier to shoot than Iron sights but the lack of power forced me to go to the binoculars several times to insure I didn't shoot a spike. If you are choosing between Iron and red dot...I would pick red dot because it is easier to shoot...but I believe a 2x7 or 3x9 rifle scope allows you to see your game clearer and allows you to pick a clear line so as not to hit a twig while in the timber.

I am a fan of red dots for fast target shooting and in most hunting situations close up.

They have a couple other downfalls other than lack of power,,battery going dead ,,cost me a close shot on one buck with a muzzleloader,,50 yards.

I had another mounted on a 44 mag handgun,,when i brought the gun up,,to shoot another nice buck,,could not find the dot,,,then i noticed the dot was in the far right of the scope,,,one of the lenses had cracked from a previous shot/cold weather...that one really hurt.

Hope this helps..........X

Can't speak for the Burris Fastfire but I've had excellent results with Bushnell and Eotech holosights....they've performed flawlessly for me year after year.

I've tried a couple of the tube style red dots made by Bushnell that looked more like a conventional scope but suffered from washout in bright light causing me not to be able to see the dot...with the Holosights that's not a problem, regardless of how bright the sun is you can still see the reticle.

The Burris FastFire II is a very nice sight. I have put them on a 1911, 22 handgun, Shotgun and a AR. Been using them for two years now and haven't had to change a battery.

I have wondered about the burris myself. I own a doctor optic. I have had it for 10 years now. The battery is a CR2032 and I have only changed it twice. It is on a rimfire pistol but at one time or another it has been on heavier caliber guns and has held up well.

It works great for rimfire pistol work. I have killed tons of ground squirrels with it.
Leopold makes a red dot similar to the fast fire. I would trust their warranty more than burris.

Just my 3 cents.

The Leopold cost twice as much as the Burris! The Leopold has one feature that the Burris doesn't have: It has a motion switch that turns the dot on when moved.

i took it out and sighted in yesterday.it was so easy to sight in which really surprised me.i really like this sight ithought it might be hard to hit consistantly at 100 yards but i just centered the dot and squeezed it was putting them in there it stayed about an 1.5 inch group which i dont think is to bad for not having any magnification.for close up hunting red dots are the way to go
