5.56/.223 Is the 1 in 8 twist predator upper 20" good for 55 grain bullets or should I go with the varmint 24" upper with 1 in 9 twist for 55 grain bullets. I hunt mostly open country. And do get long shots. Thanks Dave

The faster the twist rate, the heavier the bullet that you can stabilize. In my 1:9 20" barrel, I shoot 60 gr sp Black Hills amazingly! With that 1:8, you could shoot some heavy bullets with good carry to them. Of course you always have to practice, the gun will probably prefer a certain load, but thats generally the rule.

This is what i recomend , do what you want to do . a good coyote rifle is lightweight easy to pack around swings fast and is accurate . That being said , a 16 inch AR is just as accurate @ 300 yrds( Effective range for that caliber) as a 20 or 24 inch barrel. I can almost guarantee you that if you purchase a 20 or 24 inch AR there will come a time youll wish you had gone with the 16 . This post comes from someone who has been there done that . I would go with the 1-9 twist . It will suit your needs . Jerry .

I would prefer both the 1-8 and the 20" barrel. The 24 is ok but the 20 is easier to handle all the way around, shooting , swinging, packing, storing, and hauling with very little velocity dif.
Noise factor is not much different. I shoot 55 gr well with 1-8 22 in barrel. Not all bullets or barrels are the same so some combinations may shoot better.

I have the exact rifle you are referring to and I shoot 55 gr NBT's and 55 gr SGK's with groups less than MOA. It is a little heavy to carry but shoots really well.

I have the same rifle you are discribing and mine shoots very good with 60gr sierra varmiters.I also have a 1\9 twist in a 16 inch and it shoots very well but is a lot louder to shooot.I also have a 24 inch with a 1/8 twist but it a bench gun as it is heavy to carry.I use the 20 and 16 both for coyotes and like both guns the same

I also have the RRA predator pursuit in a 20" and although it is an extremely accurate tackdriver, I'm find it a bit heavy and long. I'm seriouly thinking about having it shortened to 18" and fluted to make it a little more hiking friendly. All that said, I've killed a lot of coyoyes with just as it is and like I said it's a tack driver. I wouldn't advise anything over 20"

Each rifle, and each barrel length, has its own application. Everyone has to figure out what works the best for them. Heavy rifles do not bother me, so the 24" barrel would work just fine. Besides, that long heavy barrel looks very cool.
