Bushmaster Varmiter

My friend is selling his bushmaster varmiter after buying it this last fall. It has only been shot 20times. It has a nice 3-12 power scope on it that i know he paid over $100. How much is this gun worth if i would buy it? How much do u think he could get from the store he bought it at? I know he paid over $1000 for the gun brand new. Thanks for the help!

First off you ought to ask him how much he wants.

I'm not an expert but I suspect a gun store or pawn shop will want to buy low and sell high so he'd be lucky to get somewhere between $500 to $750 from them. It won't matter to them that he only shot one box through it.

If he's a "friend", and it's as good as you say, and it has a scope and he really paid that much (which sounds right), and maybe he'll even let you try it out?---why not pay him what he has in it----$900 to $1,100

Your call

There are probably some old time "horse traders" out there, but I suspect it's a dying art.

I would say the package is worth more like $700, not knowing what kind of scope it is. Bushmaster Varminters can be had for $800 new, then the scope, say $900. Now that its used you discount from there. Just because he's your friend doesn't mean you need to pay him more than its worth, unless you just want to do him a favor.....

it would be worth buying for 700. and even then, it is a heavy rifle that isnt any more accurate than a good carbine. if you are going to use it for calling i would go with something else. there is reason he is selling it. for the same or less money for that bushy you could get into a lighter, easier to point rifle that you will be much happier with in the long run. i bought one and it only left my house a few times until i sold it. but thats just my opinion.

I have to agree that if predator hunting is high on the list my preferences would also be a lighter gun. I really like my 16" M4 barrel Bushmaster for carrying around. Though if you could get it for a really good price it may be worth jumping on.

Before we go and low ball a friend you might want to check again. Dealer cost on the varminter is about $860.00, list price is $1245.00 and 98% shows $900.00 for the gun by itself. My partner paid $800.00 for his like new but that was a steal.

The V-match is a little cheaper but the Varminter has the better barrel and a NM 2 stage trigger. (which still should be replaced with a Jewell)

The scope is kind of like pin stripes on a truck, it looks nice but you ain't gonna pay extra for them. The Varminter has a fluted barrel and is not that heavy or bulky, I just wish they made it in a 20" gun. They do tend to shoot extremely well.

I would say it is worth at least 800.00,It is an excellent gun and more accurate than the carbine length barrel,The only advantage to the shorter barrel is handling and you can't beat the longer barrel of the varminter for more velocity, I have used mine for coyotes and chucks and the longer barrel is not a bother to me at all.the only complaint I have with mine is the trigger and that will be replaced with a Jewell in the near future. My gun shoots under an inch all day with the Winchester 45 grain ammo_Out here in Texas they go for around 1000.00 and don't stay on the shelves for very long.

I have a bushmaster varmintor and bought it used well I should say traded a friend a sp1 for it . Roughly worth 900 dollars used last year. I put a Leupold 4.5-14 scope on it and it shoots factory winchester 45gr exxxxxxxxxtremely well, It also shoots heavey bullets well,

I bought a Bushy Varminter in January and new cost at Sportsman Warehouse, Boise, Id. was $979.00 Maybe there are places to get it cheaper but I couldn't find one. List price new was $1250.00. I'm happy with what I paid. Absolutely a great gun. I reload, but I bought a blue box of Black Hills 52 grain hollow point match bullets just to play with it the first day, 5 shot group about .330 group size. On my reloads have shot groups of .260 - .265 consistently. This is done with 40, 50 grain V-Max, and Hornady 52 grain boat tail hollow point match bullets. First coyote was shot with the 52 grainers, my standard for yodel dogs about 150 yards. Can't keep count of how many Columbian ground squirrels and rock chucks have met their demise from this rifle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif, the sots have been from 50 yards to 450 yards. This was done off of shooting sticks I made and a Harris bipod. I personally give two cents one way or the other aout the weight of this rifle for dog hunting. I have killed hundreds of coyotes since 1984 when I moved to Idaho, and have used 700 Rem. VSSFP, Ruger 77 varminters, Rem model 7 stainless, in 223 and 22-250. I have yet to shoot one coyote that weighed less than any of my rifles. Anyway, I think you are getting a good deal if your fried is happy with your deal. Good Luck with your new rifle if you get it, YOU WON'T BE SORRY, in my humble opinion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bushmaster Varminters can be had for $800 new

Dude, you must be one heck of a shopper because I believe that is below dealer cost. I bought one about a month ago and the DEALER cost on it was $889 + the $40 the dealer charges over their cost + sales tax = roughly $990. I'm not sure where one can be bought new for $800 but I would certainly like to know! And BTW, the Varminter IS an excellent shooter. I've only had mine out for a short break in session, but the 5th-7th shots out of a new barrel measured .171" CTC at 100 yds. using 55 gr. BT handloads. I tried two other handloads using 50 gr. BT's and got great accuracy out of them as well. The Bushmaster Varminter is a winner and will make you an excellent gun regardless of the price paid!

I just bought mine and it was 1029.00 in Memphis, TN. I havent shot it yet. If it shoots as good as it looks it is worth every penny

Nic 58,

It seems that the prices on them have gone up for 2005, but last year when I was looking at buying one at the big Houston gunshows, when you would have 8-10 dealers competing in the same room, they were running show specials on them at $799. But that situation is hard to duplicate, I agree. A quick check on GunsAmerica shows the cheapest one there now at $899.

But anyway, I ordered a custom super-match varmint upper from Dtech for $530(fluted) instead of the Bushy Varminter, and have been real happy with the accuracy.

That's for sure and they will probably never be any cheaper than they are today. $800 for a Varminter would have been a great buy even last year! Anyway, good luck with the new D-Tech upper. I've heard nothing but good reviews on them. According to others, he puts out a fine product for sure! What caliber did you get?

Its just a good ol 223. My local shop has regular sales on the Black Hills 52 gr HP and that's what it likes....

Are we talking about the stainless barreled varminter or the regular barreled varminter? If it's not stainless, then I figure it's just a 24" HBAR with a fancy handguard. I know that the Vmatch barrel is actually just a HBAR. Nothing special about it. A Vmatch upper is just a HBAR with a FF tube, flattop, and milled FSB.

The V-match is just a fully chromed HBAR with a tube, the Varminter is either SS or a non chromed, fluted chrome moly barrel based off their DCM target barrel. Strictly made for accuracy (so they say).
