By catch?

How do you avoid getting animals like deer and turkey in your sets. I have a piece of land with some cats and yotes and I am thinking of trying to trap them. However they use a lot of the same trails as the deer and turkey and I am worried about getting one of them.
Thanks

try setting slightly off to the side of a trail or set your traps against stumps of logs. normally turkeys wont walk that close to a stump to get caught.
also try using food baits with a meat base not sweet stuff.

Thanks Zach. Any other suggestions?

I take it that most traps are set with bait rather than just set on a game trail?

what i meant was food rather than an attractant scent such as a gland lure or call lure.

i dont know if you can snare them in ks. or not but if you have their trails narrowed down that would be the way to go.

Deer shouldn't be an issue...they step in and step out of most small traps due to the shape of their foot/hooves. I never put sets on a used deer trail anyway....

Don't use corn as bait(or put it in a hole) so turkey's won't be tempted.

Like sdb777 said, deer are not an issue. You cannot hold a deer in a leghold traps designed for cats and yotes. It just won't work. Turkeys can be caught in leghold traps but they are normally not interested in your sets. We have tons of turkeys and I have no problems.
Make sure you study your state regulations and gain alot of knowledge prior to trapping. Study the archives, read books, and buy videos prior to setting traps. Take care
