California Valley Quail chicks?

Guys, I'm thinking about raising some game birds on our place here in Wyoming. I've checked all the Reg's and am good to go.

I would like to raise some Valley Quail, but after searching for hours online, can't seem to find a source for chicks.

Any of you SW USA guys know of any hatcheries that have Valley's available? I do plan to raise some Bobwhites but would love to have some Valley Quail, too.

WYOYOTE Will they survive the winters here? Just curious.
Also, what was F&Gs position on doing what you want to do? Again, just curious. I looked into this as well when we were trying to figure out how to restore our pheasant population and although the idea sounded real good at the time? we decided to bring them back naturally through predator control. That approach worked for us so we dropped the idea of 'pen raising' the replacements and future brood stock; understanding that the loss rate would be 90% on the pen birds released. Good luck on your project.

Another subject: Looks like Park County is looking for a sportsman for their Animal Damage Management Board. I think you would be a shoe in myself.

Dogwhcker,

with proper Wyo. State permits (game farm certification, etc.) from the G & F, Valley's would be acceptable. I wouldn't be stocking the range, just our private property. This is something I've thought about doing, but at times I 2nd guess myself. We have a fair # of pheasants already and a bunch of chukars. Might pay to just work with what we've got.

Will they (Valley Quail) live here in our climate? Well, these birds are located in the Owhyee Range of Nevada/Idaho which is exactly like the McCullough Peaks...elevation, climate, etc., I've been told by folks who should know they'd do just fine. But, I don't know of anybody else with Valley's here in Wyoming, so it might of been a crapshoot.

Problem is, very few to no hatchery Valley quail available :>( All is probably a moot point.

yea, I see that there is a spot on the Park Co. ADC board...heck, I don't know...is it worth it?

ADC board: I'm on the Bighorn County Board as a sportsman, and, yes it is worth it. You have influence(as a sportsman) on what game or bird projects you would like to see in your county, what the live stock producers are dealing with, what FW&S is doing for the county and WHERE. You get involved with Fish and Game and their activities and you get access to the biologists working in your area. The 'appointment' is made by the county commissioners and you will have to submit a biography of yourself along with why you should be considered. The terms are setup in 1,2,3 year increments and you cannot serve more than 5 years. Times a wasting. Get-er-done!!

Looks like you have this quail thing all figured out as well.
