Went out this morning. It was a great morning to try calling. There was no wind, and a nice cool frosty morning. I set up where I had saw a couple last weekend. I was in a fencerow about 50 ft wide. It is about 1/4 mile long, with an old road going down the center of it. I set up behind a small tree with branches hanging from it. I had blown my howler twice and was considering making a pup in distress call when I saw a coyote coming fast about 40 yards from me. He was busy looking for the strange dog in his territory and did not see me. He started angling away, all the time looking over his shoulder. Just like I had seen them do countless times on the videos. He stopped out about 100 yards. I had no choice but to stand up to try for the shot. I thought that any time he was going to spook, but he didn't. I finally got the crosshairs to steady behind his front shoulder. I slowly pulled the trigger on my Ruger M77 in .223, and to my surprise watched him go down hard. The 55 grain v-max worked perfectly. This morning was a lot of firsts for me. The first time I had shot at a coyote with the Ruger, the first time I had set up and called with my Cronk Howler, and the first time I had called a coyote in and shot it. I feel I had paid my dues to get this coyote. I had hunted hard about 4 years I guess, tried a lot of calls and ideas, and did a lot of research. I would like to thank everyone for the ideas I have read on here which helped me a lot, and Mr. Cronk for his great calls. Watching that coyote come in this morning is something I have waited a long time to see, and this morning it was all worth while.
