Called in a river otter!

I just thought I'd mention a little episode from last weekend. I went beaver hunting with my dad, brother, sister and her boyfriend. (One needs a little quality time with the family now and then! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

On the first morning I spotted a river otter about 100 yards upstream. After I'd been watching it for a minute or two I heard it make little calls, short and high pitched. I had a Crit'R Call standard in my pocket and figured I could mimic that sound.

On my first call the otter replied and went in the water. It swam straight in to the bank under my feet, replying constantly. All the time this 1/2-1 sec call with 2-3 sec in between. It got to 10-15 yards from me. Then it caught wind and was gone.

Just a neat experience!

I called one in while I was trying to call in yotes and wolves on a small frozen lake 2 winters ago. I wasnt sure if it was a mink or otter at first but it came in pretty close.

I wish I had my camera handy. He was peeking over a log at me. Perfect op.

My huntin' partner and I called in a mink once. We saw him cross the frozen creek, then all of the sudden he was looking right at us, about 20 feet away.

about three weeks I got the new johny stewert coon cd and i took my dad and friend out at about ten o'clock. I stood in the back of the pickup with the spot light and put the speaker on the picnic table down at my campground along the river turned it on and imediatly saw eyes, coyote!
a couple minutes later heard this real weird sound in the water started watching in river and counting eyes, we had four otter come in, they stayed there quite a while all the time just talking up a storm.

by the way its legal in iowa as long as no firearms are in possession and it was the coon and squeling bird

I'm glad you posted this. I called up a family of 6 otters on the Iowa River, last season. Then, a pair of them a few months later. I thought it was just coincidence. Now I'm not crazy.

Thanks for sharing...Tony

TTEbbe, Glad to hear that! I always go to this site when I want it confirmed I'm not crazy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have called an otter in before. I was hunting a frozen lake with a open crick running out of it. I have called in fishers also. Those seem to come out of nowhere, really close and scare the crap out of you. Fun messing with them all. Too bad its illegal to shoot them and it would be nice if the rifle wouldnt most likely rip them apart. A 17 would be about the right caliber for them. Otherwise shooting them would be a waste. Any beavers shot?

We got some beavers too. I took my father, youngest brother, sister and her boyfriend to one of my old areas and didn't do much but scout myself. My father and brother shot two each, sister's boyfriend one (where I saw the otter) and my sister had some chances but didn't pull the trigger. I didn't get one myself but then again that was no priority!
