Called in fisher.....

Is it common to call in fisher? Last night on my first stand (the 4th one ever), about 4:30pm, I called in a fisher with a rabbit in distress call. I spotted him about 300 yards+ down a river bottom and he just kept comming right to the call. I guess fishers like to eat distressed rabbits. Anyway,I thougt is was cool. Still have never called in a fox though.

They like rabbits so its no surprise that they come to a call. I have seen them in my travels and have come across their tracks while out calling but have yet to call one in. That would be cool! We can't shoot them in Minnesota, only trap them.

I have called in a couple different fishers. One scared the crap out of me since it jumped over a log right behind me and I caught the movement out of the corner of my eye. We have a trapping season. With a small gun you might be able to shoot one and save the pelt. I would not recommend taking one out of season. I have also called in otters and owls. Probaly they were just looking at what the heck is all the ruckus. I also seen weasels. But they are just messing around. Me and my bro have called in foxes at different times. A double once even. But they are impossible to hit... I swear bullets zip on thru their red fur. After you shoot they turn into a red streak with a vapor trail of snow behind them.

Never actually called in a fisher or marten, but I have called in a few owls and the odd hawk. Our Marten/Fisher trapping season is only two weeks long up here and a trapping acquaintance of mine said he blows on a rabbit distress call every time he checks his sets. He runs about sixty sets so thats a heckuva lot of calling. I started doing it as well a couple seasons ago but I can't say for sure if it upped my catch, but probably didn't hurt.

Wow... I'm jealous. That's one humongous mustelid. I'd really like to call one of these guys and know what a thrill that musta been. I'm interested in hearing how quickly it moved, etc. so please provide more detail.

Managed to call a Pine Marten up in Sequoia NP a dozen years ago... that was a hoot! On my first trip there to the General Sherman Tree and Congress Grove I saw one bounding through the woods with a chipmunk in his mouth, followed him until he disappeared into a big shattered sequoia slash pile. Came back a couple of weeks later and lipsqueaked him out for some photos. Without a doubt, that was one of the fastest whirling dervishes I've ever experienced. He kept bouncing around up and down some small saplings all around me for a good fifteen minutes.
