I haven't heard many coyotes until tonight ,there back.I heard a lot of yapping and stuff.Ran right out with my rifle and saw one real big guy out acroos the field. It was a hard shot and I didn't connect.Tracked him for fun and I started hearing 3 different coyotes calling from 3 different locations.I was surprised after shooting .Where they just looking to locate each other.I have to get some type of howler it would have been interesting to get in the mix.Any advice on how to proceed. Thanks

lil T, same thing happened to me 10 days ago. I called in a double and shot and missed one. Got up to investigate/look over the scene, and 3-4 hundred yds out, he started yapping and howling at me like mad. I gotta believe that he did not smell me or identify me as danger, but thought maybe I was an intruder on his area. He let me have it for ten mins. then snuck off. I have been told that one bark with a howl is a less agressive vocalization than 2-3 barks and a howl. When I locate, I always do one bark and a howl, then if they answer, I simply repeat what they do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Savage99 I am not sure what the deal was maybe they were telling each other not to be afraid of me because ,I can't hit anything.Tonight I am going to hike over where the other guys were calling from.I tell you even though I didn't connect this really got me going on hunting coyotes, what fun.

lil t ranch, your post said calling across mountians. No way you are going to hear a coyote call across a mountian out here lol. I don't think anyone can speak coyote, but knowing the right kind of sounds "howls" to use can really help. They have cassettes and CDs out to tell you how it's done, Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Danny B ,I guess what I am calling mountains to some area's might only be hill tops. This is the Catskill mountain range.Where I live is really open out the back of my house I could get a 500-600 yrd.shot if I could pull it off.I have to admitt my property set up is very good for coyotes .We have a very large deer, rabbit, and other goodies for them to feed on.I think you are right knowing the right sound would bring them in .That is what I have to learn to do,thanks for the advice. One of our dogs is deaf and he howls alot when he can't see us ,sometimes the coyotes answer.
