Calling All Rabbits

An unusual request, I have a Fox Pro 3. Is anyone aware of a good call to call in nervous jacks and cottontails? I have a friend with a ranch and the buggers are eating his vegetation like crazy. By the time you unlock the main gate to enter the property they have all gone down. Was hoping to call some in. Thanks in advance.

I don't know of anything that calls a rabbit in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I know that when you place the caller in the brush & turn it on with rabbit distress, the rabbits in the area will jump up & leave though.....The sound of one of their buddies getting eaten alive makes them nervous for some reason. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You can get a shot on them that way sometimes.

Cottontails will come running to any good carrot distress sound. If they are call shy with the carrot then try the cottontail mating sound. It is a very fast, busy sort of sound that usually, but not always, ends with a happy rabbit sound.

Jackrabbits are much harder to call, although they will on occasion respond to the carrot sound just as the cottontails will. Jackrabbits have very good hearing and sense of smell. They will normally try and circle downwind. Be very, very careful if you try a mating jack sound in thick cover. They are extreamly aggressive and could give you a whole new meaning to 'watch your backside'.

Good luck.

We went to arizona this past spring and were trying to call coyotes and had a couple come in on almost every stand, pretty interesting. We were just using jack rabbit distress with handcalls.

An Elmer Fudd costume and a "waskilly wabbit" call might help. Maybe call in a bunch of coyotes but don't shoot them. Sorry for the jokes, I would try a night light and 410 or 22, that will clean em out.

There is a certain time of year here where I have repeatedly called in jacks with a little enclosed reed antler call that I have . jacks have responded from as far out as 100 yrds and have come as close as 3 yrds. A couple people people who have hunted with me (including my daughter and a friend from high school) have witnessed this. Unfortunatly it only works a certain time of year and is not a 100% sure thing but has happened enough times to know it's not just a fluke.

what the *&^^^$$^ is a carrot distress call?

I believe that is similar to "blinker fluid" for your car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I have also had cottontails and jackrabbits come to distress calls, and it happens way more often than not. When you get up to leave just look around and often you will see rabbits leaving the area. Think they are just curious?

It sounds similar to "lettuce in distress", but more muffled.
Hard to describe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
