I was just wondering what you all thought or your expiernces have been with running predators vs calling them. Im intrested in both!!! Safe and Happy Hunting

Though hound hunting is much more efficient. I prefer calling ten fold. Hound hunting seems like more of a witch hunt to me. Most hound hunters I've met prefere hunting from the truck, have poor hunting skills and are also poor shots and have little respect for the animal. I watched a guy hit a coyote on the first shot in the leg at 70yds with his AR-15. The coyote stopped and started spinning, so the guy unloaded his 25 shot clip at the yote and missed every shot. I wont make drives or hound hunt coyotes any more.

Letting the hounds do all the work doesn't sound right. I like to see them come in thinking that they are going to eat me!!!! Big supprise!!! Don

This was quite a controversial topic, last year on this board.

I would have to agree 100% with 55gr-kill-pill, on every point he made. And I was a hound hunter for over 12 years or so. I had 22 dogs (foxhounds and greyhounds) dedicated for running coyotes.

Calling for sure at least for me. My cousin hunts with a crew of guys that use dogs to run coyotes. It can be interesting, but it really isn't my style. I have gone a couple of times over the years. A lot of the guys never even get to the woods. In other words they stay in the truck. They do kill a fair number of coyotes though. Generally they get about 60 yotes a year.Believe it or not some of these guys can shoot pretty good though.Besides calling, myself and 2 or 3 other guys track in the snow and do some drive hunting. How many of you have ever stalked a coyote and shot him at 20 yrds? That is hunting!

Although i am not a sharp shooter by any means i will take a coyote or fox any way i can get them.Today was the first time ever runing dogs with a friend and i have tried numerous times with a mouth call and my e caller. So far i have had one coyote come to within 20 yards and it was behind a bush so no shot.Hunting from a truck a truck may be lazy but Im not having any luck with my caller so wicthever works Im not going to complain, I just want to shoot a couple.

Spot and stalk hunting can be a blast! Though still second to calling. I love to spot and stalk.

When you become better at calling, and you will with time, You'll probly give up the 200yrd running shots and swiss cheese coyote, for 30yrds standing still looking you in the eye and dropping him softly in his tracks with one shot.

thanks for the replies so far guys , i figured theres some controvery to running em with hounds, personally ive never done it, but im one that needs to try something before making up my mind. i may give er a wirl although id rather call em in, especially in to bow range, but im not holding my breath

Jeff:
You owe it to yourself to try it. I know I did. more than once even, cause I wanted to give it an honest try and not give up on it after the first hunt. You may like it, who knows. Good luck either way.
P.S. BE SAFE.

Well,
I grew up hunting yotes with trucks and dogs. I have just gotten into calling, and would like to get good at it, though I still love a good truck hunt. I only shoot if it is a good shot and a safe one. What I enjoy is the truck part, or Jeep in my case. I am an off-road enthusiast and I enjoy taking my Jeep into some places that are challenging. I really love when the snow gets deep and it gets hard to go anywhere. That is when the fun begins for me (realize that my family owns much of the property we hunt on and we have permission to be on the rest). The other nice thing about truck hunting to me, is my fiance really enjoys going with, so I need no excuses to go. If the group is hunting, she wants to be there with them.
Also, the group only hunts if the ground is frozen and preferably with snow on the ground. When these conditions aren't present, I am calling them.

Edited to say that I don't shoot from my vehicle. This is illegal and I don't care to break any laws while hunting if and when at all possible.

I think both are excellent ways of hunting. I have and will do both.

The problem I see is the Truck hunters do a lot more trespassing, in turn pissing off land owners, inturn ruining hunting opportunities for others on private land.

We have truck gangs here that hunt entire township blocks while having permission to hunt less than 10% of it.

Well, the only land owners that we have problems with are the ones that own just a small tract of land and don't live in the area. Basically people from urban areas who have bought rural property and don't want anyone hunting coyotes, because they think it ruins the deer hunting. Even though we don't begin coyote hunting until January. We do get prior permission to hunt on the property, and most of the farmers love us, as long as everyone is smart enough to stay off the unpaved roads when the ground is thawed. Half the guys we hunt with are farmers, like my father.

If you're trying to rid an area of them, fine, but where's the satisfaction in "lucking" upon an animal? Keep at the calling and learn what it's like to have a successful predator HUNT instead of just a predator kill. The satisfaction for me is in the "matching of wits" with possibly the smartest critter on 4 legs, not using him as a moving target.

I've had large deer and elk in my sights that haven't got my blood pumping the way a coyote does after a 20 minute howling exchange session and eventual call in. Most exciting type of hunting there is, IMO, and you can't get that excitement or satisfaction by jump shooting them from a vehicle.

I think the main thing is for everyone to get outdoors and enjoy some coyote or fox hunting or whatever you enjoy hunting as long as you are within legal limits have fun any way you can.Good luck and good shooting to everyone.

It's guys like you and TRL wg1 I feel sorry for, cause it's the guy's I'm refering to (the hacks) who are giving the guys like you a bad name. -MOST- hound hunters seem to be this way, though I know that all aren't. If you go more than twice you might find out what I'm talking about. Have you ever seen the hounds kill the coyote?

when i first posted this topic i had no idea just how contriversial it is. I didnt intend to offend anyone, just intrested in your opinions. my own personal opinion on hunting is we need to support any legal method or we are just hurting ourselves, i feel hunters of any kind all need to stick together do to anti pressure from big budget groups such as peta thanks all and be safe
