calling bears on the ground or in a tree ?

I have a big black that tore up a corner of a farmers oats field this past fall. He said nobody even came to hunt him. It seems like the perfect place. In the section there is a quarter of dense woods, Oats, and 2 quarters of alfalfa with a creek and beaver pond running through it all. Very easily accessible. Lots of deer and elk around as well. I know where he was coming out to eat oats in the fall, is it a no-brainer to concentrate on that area when he wakes up ? This is also a no baiting zone in Alberta, so I want to give the calling thing a try. I am familiar with the differnt calls to use, my main question is am I better off calling from the ground or in a tree stand. Personally I would prefer to be in a tree, just want to know if one way is better than the other ?

Go for the tree if is an easy set-up and helps you see a LOT better. Otherwise I'd stay on the ground. Tree perches are usually slow and complicated to set up for a calling stand.

Safety is a minor issue IMO. You will have a rifle and since it is a nuisance bear, you will shoot on sight no matter how big or small it is.

If the farmer plants oats or corn again, you have a spot that is almost a lead pipe cinch. If you handle it right, only hunting in a zoo would up your odds! Rendered lard from grain fed bears is the finest.

The field will be an oat field again. It's just a half mile ride on the quad across the field to the corner where the bear was coming out in the fall. The landowner says it is a big one. The dogs had it treed in the yard once and it couldn't get 6 ft. off the ground. Don't know why he didn't shoot it then, but he didn't. I myself would feel much better in the tree since I have never bear hunted before.

I hunted bears in MN for years,If you can find a tree that will work, set up on a trail and use a climbing stand. Also don't be afraid to walk aways,my best stands where at least a half mile walk from the road.If you call, call steadilly for as long as you sit because bears have the attention of a 6yr old boy.You have to keep their interest.Good luck.

Exactly!
I have called dozens of bears and have called a few times from trees. It is cubersome and can be limiting.
