hey fellas, i recently attended the national trappers convention in Columbia, Mo. while i was there i went to a live otter demonstration. during the demo the speaker mentioned that otter mainly eat crawdads and fish however, they have found all kinds of prey in their stomachs. muskrat, mink, birds and even beaver. its got me to thinking. an otter is a predator and very curious just like a cat. maybe they could be called in. set up in a swamp where you know otter frequent and call them in? have any of yal tried this or given it a thought? sounds crazy? tell me what you think. Thanks, Brad

I'm not sure you otter do that! Omigawd did I say that out loud. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't know why it wouldn't work, except that the spent a lot of time underwater, and I ain't sure I could hold my breath that long. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Check your local regs. as some areas require a trappers licence to take otter.

i heard on the radio that a otter attacked a young boy and bit him several times before some life guards beat him off of the kid and under a milk crate.. they say it is rabid.. so be carful

Also, as far as your regs go, be sure that calling and/or shooting is legal as a method of take. Most states have gotten very specific about how furbearers can be taken and with otters, you might be limited to restraining devices only (i.e., traps).

Lance H. is correct. Here in Iowa, the racoon is about the only fur bearer we can shoot. I think maybe I Otter go call up a coyote.

Rich!!! LMAO
We see em in bear camp, we see Otters all the time in the Creek. The ONLY place I have ever seen them here
I think ya otter hide by a creek and make fish sounds, course if ya smelled like a fish.....
might help.

Here in South Florida where I live... For a few more weeks anyway, they've eaten all the baby ducks in my canal.

In North Florida where I hunt they're in all the creeks in the National Forest and are legal to hunt. Much to the deer hound owners disgust most deer hounds love to trail and chase otters... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As you can imagine they aren't too popular up there.

I'm thinking just calling may not work,a guy may need a motion decoy. Like maybe a clam. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

good god let me know if it works on otters cause our wise guys in the state thought it would be good to have otters again, now they might have to import fish. one good call would probably be a bunch of small frogs (singing?). ok i otter clam up now for i get in trouble from big brother! you know Santas a'watching you.
