Calling Pa bobcat?s

Big cat

New member
Just wondering when the best times are to call in a cat here in the east. I gave it a shot a little last year at day break with no success. Got the flu and that ended my season. This year I have found tracks and heard of a few in another area so I want to do it right. Any input is appreciated.

last season we saw fresh tracks, no more than 2 hrs old, around 4 in the morning. tried calling on it's backtrail twice to no avail. then decided to track it up one of the hills up from the clarion river. we gave up about half way up the hill. Pretty sure if we would've had more than 3 hours of sleep in 48 hrs we coulda tracked it down. doesn't exactly answer your question, but maybe it'll help.

Call during low light (first or last light) or in the dark if you have the equipment to do so. I have killed cats at first light and right before sunset. Had eyes for my hunting buddy this morning at 1:30 that I am certain was a cat. Use higher frequency sounds like cottontail distress, squirrel distress, bird distress and be prepared to sit 30-60 minutes. If you happen to setup right next to where one is then you could see it in a matter of 3-5 minutes. Have patience. You won't call them in on every stand. They will sneak in without you hearing them so constantly scan the area for movement or a new shape. The new shape might be a cat that has come in and sat down to look for the source of the call. Scent is not a concern like when calling for coyotes or foxes. I have had my best luck in or next to thick cutovers and along swamp bottoms at beaver dams. If you know where a beaver dam is sit uphill from it and put the caller below you. The key to it is knowing that they are in the area. You can't kill them if they aren't there. Good luck.

Just started last year myself for cats. Decoy 218 gave you great advice. Nighttime is predator time. That's when your best chances are but like all other hunting whenever you have time. Good luck !

This weekend should be good. Tomorrow night the low will be in the teens around here. I'm looking for my first coyote. I have a bobcat permit too so come January it's on! So far this year I called in a pack of 4 coyotes that I whiffed on (almost pooped myself when I saw 4 sets of eyes show up) and 1 red fox that wouldn't commit. I love this stuff!

I do a lot of my cat hunting up near you Big Cat. Find fresh sign around old ponds or beaver dams and hunt them hard. Cats can move a lot but will make a circle. If they are not there one day, they may be the next. This 39lb tom was called next to a beaver dam.

Me as well, great cat stickbow!! Ws able to get one behind hounds the last year they had the drawing, saw a mother and 2 of this years kittens walking an old logging road in bear season, so thats where I will start my season in that general area.

Nice cat stickbow.

I had one come in a few weeks ago at night to Cal Taylor's cottontail distress on the FoxPro. They have also come in to DSG cottontail.

Im not much of a cat guy but last night about half hour before dark I had 3 bobcats come out of a norway pine plantation. I didnt shoot as I was hoping a wolf would show up and i had way to much gun. We have a fair amount of snow and im sure the plantation was full of rabbits. My guess is a mom with 2 kits? The pines were about 20 acres planted in a old logged off piece of large timber tract.

Hang around here for a awhile and you will see a lot of cat pictures and usually the excited hunter has over estimated the weight by a fair amount. Cats seem to be particularly hard to judge their weight until you have some experience. But in this case it is easy to see that is a monster bobcat. Congrats on that big boy!
