Calling sequence during mating season?

Just because it's mating season, doesn't mean that coyotes don't eat. There daily routine doesn't change that much just because he needs to mount the old lady. The window to breed a dog in heat isn't that wide and since they only have one partner they're not getting it done all day every day.

They still get hungry and rabbit's still scream in February just like they did in October, well at least the ones inside my FX5 do anyway. And that doesn't even take into account the much higher percentage of coyotes that don't even breed.

I will agree with soreloser, but my tactics change a little this time of year. I always start out with a interogation howl or female invitation. Then I will wait about four to five minutes if nothing shows up or responds then I go to Ki-Yi's. It all depends on hunting pressure and I like to use other distres sounds. I only hand call so fawn,Ki-Yi or rabbit is all I can do. If I get a response I do what they do. If I get a challenge howl I will challenge back just a little higher pitched than them so it sounds like a younger male and I challenge them alot really raise heck. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. To me its very exciting to have a dominant male come in looking for a fight. My .02

Tim is on his no howling soap box again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. But I tend to agree with what both getlemen have said. Tim is right they have to eat and in fact I believe in the winter they must eat more so it is never a bad thing to sound like an easy meal. But I have had awesome luck with female interigation howls and pup in distress calls also this time of year. Each coyote is different and may respond to one or more of these sounds where the next yote isnt bitting on any of the sounds. But #1 priority is the animal has to eat frequently and Tim made a great point the mating season is really short and some animals may be early or late so trying just to key in on mating season only type of sounds will limit your success IMO.

I've never read the rule book for calling yotes! LOL!! I usually start with distress sounds. If nothing shows up in 20 - 30 minutes I'll throw some vocals out there. Just have fun with it!! Sure beats watching MTV !! LOL!!!
