Gee guys, I don't have "dog" in my name but have killed a couple in my time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Regardless of what some may say on this board, I think a good howler works all of the time. Very few coyotes actually respond when I howl and most come in silent. I use it on every stand starting of with a couple of lonesome howls about 1 minute apart. I listen between each howl just in case one responds. When they do, point my gun in their direction. After a couple of minutes, I lay into the dying rabbit sequence and give it everything I have. Some say start out slow and soft but the country I call in is pretty open and usually if a coyote is close it has already seen me on the way in. I blow this sequence for 4-5 minutes then do a lot of glassing. At about minute 9-10 I hit them with the challenge howl, ki-yi of a whipped dog and one more dominate challenge howl. After that I lay into to soft squeeking of my open reed call. I always stay on a stand for 15 minutes and continue glassing the whole time. Can't tell you how many coyotes I've seen at minute 15 slowly making their way in.
That's my sequence and have used it for many years. I'm always ready to learn new tricks so if you got something better let me know.
Oh yes, I've also called in coyotes with just the howl. When they answer me right off, I'll respond back to them what they howl to me. Many times they'll come in without ever hitting the rabbit call.
